Woo Dayoung's third novel collection, "But Somebody Wants a Darker Night," has been published by Munhakdongne, leading readers into a world of fantasy and eternity. Starting with the first story, "There Was a Knife Between Us," and concluding with the title piece, "But Somebody Wants a Darker Night," the five works gradually expand the concept, unraveling the threads of Woo Dayoung's crafted world. The collection includes outstanding works such as the 2023 SF Award-winning "Long Premonition" and the selected pieces such as 'Novel of the Season' (Fall 2020) and "According to Kindness of the Beginning."
Confronting the statement, "The fact that you and I are so different, yet so united" (Author's Note), this novel presents fantastical stories born between 'me' and 'you.' Readers familiar with Woo Dayoung's second short story collection, "When I Call Alice" (Munhakdongne, 2020), might find the title of this collection somewhat familiar.
"Your face, lost in the movie, is an expressionless face, an defenseless face, a face that brings the observer to death. Only if a smile slowly appeared on that face. But somebody wants a darker night." The face hinted at in the meaningful implication left in the previous work's 'Author's Note' has now reached its conclusion here. The title, drawn from the illustration in Sebald's novel, invites us into the endless maze of the story, like a darker night.
