What’s Happening in the Gyeongsang Indie Music Scene?

Recently, whenever I discover an indie musician I like, they often turn out to be from Gyeongsang province. Bands like Say Sue Me, Bosudong Cooler, and Hathaway have already put the Busan scene on the map for indie music fans. Now, it's time to broaden that focus. You'll find numerous indie musicians from Changwon, Daegu, Yeongdeok, and other parts of Gyeongsang who are diligently cultivating their music scenes.

While the individual efforts of musicians are significant, the roles of planners and organizations that provide a platform for these artists and promote them externally cannot be overlooked. From supportive hubs like the Music Creation Center in Gyeongsang to media outlets like Otter’s Map and Boinbang, as well as longstanding live clubs like Heavy, Feedback, and Obangarde, and even music pubs and record labels like James Records, which also runs Club Commune as a communal space for Gyeongsang musicians—these entities are essential. Even I, someone who rarely ventures out of my neighborhood in Seoul, have connected with the Gyeongsang indie music scene thanks to them.

James Records has produced vinyl records for various indie musicians from Gyeongsang, such as Amateur Amplifier, Noise Glare, Seaweed Beard, Kim Il-du, and Plastic Kids. Their first vinyl was a 4th-anniversary compilation released in 2020. Since then, they have released three compilation albums, including [Farewell and Goodnight] on vinyl and digital platforms. This year, they are releasing two compilation albums themed around [Spring] and [Summer], featuring songs by musicians who are from, reside in, or are connected to Gyeongsang province.

The joy of listening to indie music lies in discovering artists who resonate with your soul and supporting them locally. I hope you find your favorite Gyeongsang band in the James Records compilations [Spring] and [Summer]. I guarantee you will.
