Herman Koch's masterpiece. Having worked in various fields including columnist and TV program producer, Koch has published a total of eleven novels. Works that are elaborate on psychological conflicts in real life and lead them to speedy narratives became bestsellers immediately after their release, and Koch became one of the most-selling national authors in the Netherlands.

His sixth full-length novel, The Dinner, generated great buzz in the media and readers at the time of its publication, selling 420,000 copies in the Netherlands in 2009 alone, and was ranked seventh as the best-selling book in Europe that year. The work graciously and acrimoniously pointed out sharp social issues such as parental ethics, sibling conflict, adoption, and violence, resulting in accumulated sales of 1 million copies worldwide and signing copyright contracts in 55 countries. It has also been made into four films in the Netherlands, Italy, the United States, and Korea. 《A Normal Family》 (starring Seol Kyung-gu, Jang Dong-gun, Kim Hee-ae, and Soo-hyun) directed by Huh Jin-ho, based on The Dinner, is set to be released in October 2024.
