조선의 가장 드라마틱했던 왕비, 원경왕후의 일대기를 다룬 역사소설이다. 역사의 격동기였던 고려 말부터 조선 건국 초기의 모습을 원경왕후의 시선으로 다뤘다는 점이 흥미롭다. 기존 매체에서 여말선초 시기를 다룰 때는 주로 이방원이나, 이성계의 시선으로 다뤘다. 원경왕후 역시 중요인물로 등장하긴 하나 그녀의 관점에서 이 시기를 본격적으로 다룬 적은 없었다. 『원경』에서는 자신의 이름을 역사에 남기려는 야망을 가지고, 차츰차츰 정권의 정상을 향해 나아가는 원경왕후의 당찬 모습을 볼 수 있다. 이 과정에서 이방원과의 사랑, 집안의 몰락, 주변 사람의 죽음 등을 겪으며 인간적으로 갈등하는 입체적인 원경왕후를 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 세자 자리를 쟁탈하기 위해, 시어머니인 강 씨와 수를 주고받는 모습은 기존 사극에서는 보기 힘들었던 새로운 갈등이다. 태종이 왕위에 오르는 과정 역시 단순한 태종의 권력욕이 아닌, 원경왕후의 오랜 야망으로 인해 이루어졌다는 서사는 원경왕후를 다시금 바라보게 한다.
