5cm per Second: the Novel (Korean)

The animated film 5 Centimeters per Second, directed by Makoto Shinkai and released in 2007, is being adapted into a live-action film set to premiere in Korea in February 2026. While the original animated version had a runtime of 63 minutes, this new film runs for 122 minutes—offering twice the length, and with it, twice the story and emotion. Even so, it shares the same sensibility as the original work.

5 Centimeters per Second: The Novel is written by screenwriter Ayako Suzuki, who was in charge of the screenplay for the live-action film. It is said that she completed the script through open and frequent discussions with director Makoto Shinkai. Rather than simply following Shinkai’s distinctive emotional style, the novel focuses on capturing the characters’ feelings while evoking the real cityscape, the changing seasons, and tranquil scenery. The bustling streets of Tokyo, a snow-covered rural train station, and the sky pierced by a soaring rocket come vividly to life in the real world, gaining a new sense of persuasiveness.

『초속 5센티미터 the novel』은 실사 영화의 작본을 맡은 스즈키 아야코 각본가가 직접 쓴 소설로, 작가는 신카이 마코토 감독과 스스럼없이 의견을 주고 받으며 각본을 완성했다 한다. 이 소설은 신카이 마코토 특유의 감성을 그대로 따라가기보다, 실제 도시의 모습, 계절의 변화, 차분한 풍광을 떠올리게 하는 동시에 인물의 감정을 담아내는 데 집중한다. 도쿄의 붐비는 거리, 눈 덮인 시골 역, 로켓이 솟구치는 하늘의 풍광이 현실 세계 속에 살아나 새로운 설득력을 갖는다.
