A Collection of Musical Novels

Franz, a publishing company specializing in music, presents a music-themed novel, "A Collection of Musical Novel." When we put earphones in our ears on the commuting bus, when we find a concert hall for our favorite performer with excitement, and when we walk down the street and the song suddenly becomes clearer and stuck in our hearts, we have experienced a rich moment in which our senses are opened with rhythm and beat in the daily life of dry silence.

The reason why the moment is clearly remembered when looking back on the past is that the colorful music added to ordinary daily life made the moment unique. Franz planned this anthology by paying attention to the power of music that expands the boundaries of life around us. The fact that a day is remembered with music means that the moment remains a story for us.

How did the five novelists represent Korean literature capture our daily lives with music? In the five novels that have been written freely, other than sharing the theme of "music," we can meet different stories as much as our own unique styles. Kim Ae-ran, who has been showing a unique sense of how closely the character's situation is related to social conditions, portrays the time of a lover who broke up for realistic reasons in "I Did Say Goodbye," sensitively capturing the moment of misunderstanding, affection, combing and overlapping when "music" and "life" are combined.

Kim Yeon-soo, who has been convincing that even if she experiences the same thing, the door to completely different possibilities can be opened depending on her attitude toward it, deals with the common music connecting the summer she spent as a child with her mother and the past summer she spent with her lover in "On the Surface" and describes the situation in which the truth of life unfolds anew according to "interpretation" in beautiful and vivid language such as a midsummer night walk.

음악 전문 출판사 프란츠에서 음악을 테마로 한 소설 앤솔러지인 『음악소설집(音樂小說集)』을 선보인다. 출퇴근 버스에서 귀에 이어폰을 꽂을 때, 설레는 마음으로 좋아하는 연주자의 공연장을 찾을 때, 길을 걷다 문득 들려오는 노랫소리가 점점 선명해지며 마음에 와 박힐 때, 우리는 무미건조한 무음의 일상에 리듬과 박자가 실리며 감각이 열리는 풍요로운 순간을 경험해왔다.

훗날 지나간 시간을 돌아보았을 때 유독 그 순간이 또렷하게 기억되는 이유는 평범한 일상에 덧입혀진 다채로운 음악이 그 순간을 고유한 것으로 만들어주었기 때문일 것이다. 우리를 둘러싼 삶의 테두리를 확장시키는 음악의 힘, 프란츠는 음악이 지닌 그 일상적인 힘에 주목하여 이번 앤솔러지를 기획했다. 어떤 날이 음악과 함께 기억된다는 것은 그 순간이 우리에게 이야기로 남았다는 뜻이기 때문이다.

같은 일을 경험하더라도 그것을 바라보는 태도에 따라 전혀 다른 가능성의 문이 열릴 수 있음을 설득력 있는 이야기로 담아온 김연수는 「수면 위로」에서 어린 시절 엄마와 함께했던 오래전 여름과 연인과 함께했던 지나간 여름을 잇는 공통의 음악을 다루며 ‘해석’에 따라 삶의 진실이 새롭게 펼쳐지는 국면을 한여름 밤의 산책 같은 아름답고 생생한 언어로 묘사한다.
