A History of Mad Women: Mother and Daughters

In December 2021, my older sister died. It was the day before the Christmas dance performance she had long been preparing. For her sister—who had a “loud, princess-like style”—Lang Lee wore a toy jeweled crown on her head and took on the role of chief mourner. At the funeral, people left her sister’s place empty and danced. Lang Lee defines her sister’s death not as suicide, but as “exhaustion death”—a life depleted after giving her entire body and heart to others, loving with everything she had under the pressures of family and society until she could no longer go on.

Over the course of four years, she wrote this manuscript slowly, letter by letter. It was painful to write, and she believed it would be just as painful to read, so she printed and bound it, sharing it only with a small circle of people who helped sustain one another. In a Korea marked by pervasive suffering, she had no intention of publishing it, and it was first released in Japan and Taiwan instead. Those who carefully received the manuscript from Lang Lee wept and wailed for their own reasons. Even at the publishing house Story Jangsu, known for focusing on women writers’ narratives, editors found themselves throwing down their pens and bowing their heads at their desks, breaking into tears each time they reviewed the text.

And yet, after reading this book, what remains in the heart is love. Though it is a history of sorrow, madness, and death, it is also the story of an eternal and innocent love that ultimately lifted Lang Lee back up, made her eat, and kept her going, enduring life. With a bit more courage, she decides to share the manuscript with the world. And she says, “Please read this book as if your life depends on it.” Borrowing the voice of her cat Junichi, who lived with her for 20 years before passing away, she urges us to eat well, live well, and keep on living.

2021년 12월, 언니가 죽었다. 언니가 오래 준비하던 크리스마스 댄스 공연을 앞둔 날이었다. 이랑은 ‘시끄러운 공주 스타일’이었던 언니를 위해 머리에 장난감 보석 왕관을 쓰고 상주를 맡았다. 장례식에서 사람들은 언니의 자리를 비워두고 춤을 췄다. 가족과 사회의 압력 속에 스스로의 몸과 마음을 타인에게 전부 내어주며 최선을 다해 사랑하다 기력이 다한 언니의 죽음을, 이랑은 자살이 아닌 ‘소진사(消盡死)’라고 정의한다.

4년에 걸쳐 한 글자 한 글자 아주 오래 썼고, 쓰는 데 고통스러웠으니 읽기도 고통스러우리란 생각에 프린트로 엮어 서로를 구하는 사이인 몇몇과만 나누던 원고였다. 고통으로 점철된 한국에서는 출판할 생각이 없어 일본과 대만에서 먼저 출간한 원고였다. 실제로 이랑이 조심스레 보내온 원고를 본 이들은 각자의 이유로 오열하고 통곡했다. 여성 작가들의 서사에 집중해온 이야기장수 편집부에서도 교정을 볼 때마다 펜을 던지고 책상 앞에 고개 숙인 편집자들의 울음소리가 터져나왔다.

그럼에도 이 책을 읽고 나면 마음속에 사랑이 남는다. 슬픔과 광기와 죽음의 역사이지만, 또한 그후 끝내 이랑을 일으켜 밥을 먹게 하고 계속해서 살아 버티게 한 영원하고 무구한 사랑의 역사이기도 하기 때문이다. 이랑은 조금만 더 용기 내 원고를 세상에 공개하기로 마음먹는다. 그리고 말한다. “이 책을 죽기 살기로 읽어주세요.” 그리고 20년간 함께 살다 세상을 떠난 고양이 준이치의 입을 빌려 잘 먹고, 잘살자고, 살아내자고 이야기한다.
