Animal Minhwa Coloring Book That Brings Good Luck

Art director Kim Yoo-sook has released her second coloring book, 《Animal Minhwa Coloring Book That Brings Good Luck》.

This new volume focuses on animal motifs from Joseon-era Minhwa paintings, which were traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and invite good luck. Each animal is paired with symbolic plants or objects—such as flowers and trees—that complement its meaning. For example, a cat resting beneath a willow tree, symbolizing regeneration and protection, invites fortune and wealth; a loyal dog is depicted alongside peonies, symbolizing prosperity and honor. These compositions reinterpret the auspicious meanings of Minhwa in a modern context.

Rather than simply reproducing traditional images, Kim Yoo-sook combines various sources and symbols to create new variations and interpretations. Illustrations of a lotus, symbolizing enlightenment and compassion, and ducks representing marital harmony and fertility, draw inspiration from the flower-paneled doors of Gyeongbuk Seonghyeolsa Nahanjeon and wooden duck models, blending historical and crafted elements seamlessly.

In another example, the three-legged crow (Samjok-o), a sacred symbol of the sun, is paired with embroidered flowers representing sincerity and blessings, creating scenes where imaginary creatures coexist with tangible craft motifs. A composition featuring a tiger, symbolizing strength and authority, alongside a tiger butterfly, representing joy and happiness, uses two tigers in a playful way to wish for fulfillment of desires.

《Animal Minhwa Coloring Book That Brings Good Luck》 is a book meant to be colored one page at a time, filled with wishes for the health and happiness of loved ones. Beyond the act of coloring itself, the calm and peace that follow become an additional gift for the heart.

민화 아트 디렉터 김유숙이 두 번째 컬러링북 《행운을 부르는 동물 민화 컬러링북》을 펴냈다.

이번 신간은 액운을 막고 행운을 기원하는 조선 민화 속 동물 모티프를 중심으로, 각각의 상징성과 어울리는 꽃과 나무 등 식물 또는 사물의 모티프를 함께 구성한 것이 특징이다. 재생과 회복의 생명력을 품은 버드나무 아래에서 액을 막고 복과 재물을 부르는 고양이가 쉬고 있는 그림, 충성과 의리를 상징하는 개와 부귀영화를 뜻하는 모란이 함께 배치된 그림 등 민화에 담긴 길상의 의미를 현대적으로 풀어냈다.
김유숙 작가는 민화의 이미지를 그대로 재현하기보다, 다양한 자료와 상징을 결합해 새로운 변주와 해석을 더한다. 깨달음과 자비를 상징하는 연꽃과 부부 화합과 다산을 뜻하는 오리의 그림은 경북 성혈사 나한전의 꽃살문에서 따온 이미지와 목각 오리 모형을 조합해 완성했다.

또한 태양을 상징하는 신성한 존재인 삼족오에는 정성과 복을 의미하는 자수꽃을 함께 배치해, 상상의 동물과 실재하는 공예적 모티프가 공존하는 장면을 만들어냈다. 힘과 권위의 상징인 호랑이와 기쁨과 행복의 징표인 호랑나비를 한 화면에 담아, 두 마리 호랑이를 통해 소망을 기원하는 위트 있는 구성도 눈길을 끈다.

《행운을 부르는 동물 민화 컬러링북》은 사랑하는 이들의 안녕과 행복을 기원하는 마음을 담아 한 장 한 장 색을 채워가는 책이다. 색칠에 몰입하는 시간 이후에 찾아오는 마음의 평화는 또 하나의 선물이다.
