Because I Like : Paris

This is the new essay collection by poet Lee Byung-ryul, who has created the genre of "travel essay" through his many books. 『Because I Like』 is the first book in the "Travel Picture Book" series published by Dal, and it captures various scenes the poet discovered in Paris, the city of art and love, accompanied by vibrant illustrations.

The poet first heard the news of his win in the New Year’s literary contest while he was in Paris. During the time when he had not yet published a poetry collection after debuting, he felt lost, prompting him to return to Paris once more. On the streets of Paris, the poet confesses that this city has always been a symbol of love to him.

For the poet, Paris is a city where people, “through love, go toward love,” where those who “reject the average” live, and where individuals, in today’s world, “want to be noticed, even if it’s just a little shine,” but also where people live with the aim of “maturing over time and stretching out far.” Though he finds them "strange" at times, the poet cannot resist being captivated by their charm, and he says he will continue to "return" there. The reason is simple: “Good because I like it.” Because he likes the place, and because he likes the people.

여러 책으로 ‘여행 에세이’라는 장르를 만들어낸 이병률 시인의 신작 산문집. 이번 『좋아서 그래』는 달에서 선보이는 ‘여행그림책’ 시리즈의 첫 책으로, 예술과 사랑의 도시 파리에서 시인이 발견한 장면들이 다채로운 그림과 함께 담겨 있다.

신춘문예 당선 소식을 들은 곳이 파리였기에 등단 후 시집 한 권 내지 못해 막막해하던 시절, 시인은 또다시 파리로 향한다. 그렇게 돌아온 파리의 길목에서 시인은 이 도시가 그에게 사랑이었음을 고백한다.
시인에게 파리는 “사랑을 경유하여 사랑으로” 가는 사람들, “평균을 거부하”는 사람들, “모두가 반짝이라도 알려”지길 원하는 요즘 세상에 “오래 익혀 멀리 뻗으려는” 사람들이 사는 도시다. 그들을 두고 “참 묘하지”라 말하면서도 주체할 수 없이 그 매력에 사로잡히고 만 시인은 오늘도 그곳으로 “돌아갈 거”라 이야기한다. 그 이유는 단순하다. “좋아서 그래.” 그곳이 좋아서, 그 사람들이 좋아서.
