Bubble Pong

In 『Bubble Pong』, the reality that Lee Yu-ri repeatedly portrays is separation. No one can avoid parting. Loved ones may leave at any time, and everyone eventually faces death. Confronted with inevitable separation, the characters in Lee Yu-ri’s fiction endure the pain of parting in their own ways. They sell the memories of having once been together, brew alcohol by steeping their joy and sorrow, slowly accept that “we” has become “you” and “I,” and wish peace for the one who has left.

The process by which two who were once one break apart and stand alone is desperate and painful. Lee Yu-ri does not diminish the pain of separation for the sake of a happy ending, nor does she turn away from the complex emotions that arise in the course of parting. Instead, she presents cheerful imagination and bright humor that chew over those feelings and push through them. The characters who try to forget, to recover, and to love again after love has ended are compelling.

These suffering characters are more beautiful than anyone blissfully happy in the very heart of love. Like the famous lyric that says, “We live parting every day,” Lee Yu-ri’s fiction leaves us—who are living through daily separations—with not only lively enjoyment but also a deep and lasting resonance.
