■ Synopsis
First there was the chic enclave Chanel Café in Myeongdong, which served as a secret haven for the fashion-forward “Miss Pants” and “Miss Skirt” in the 1970s. Then, in the 2000s, Sinchon Park emerged as the main meeting ground for LGBTQ+ teens. Finally, in 1996, the groundbreaking Lesbos opened its doors in Itaewon, becoming South Korea's first lesbian bar. Over the past 50 years, queer culture has coexisted amidst the vibrant youth culture of each of these eras, hiding almost in plain sight in bustling neighborhoods. Controversies and heated debates would spark every time their own places, created to feel comfortable and accepted, attracted unwanted attention. What connects all these spaces is the legendary queer icon and mentor to all, Yoon Kim Myung-woo, a woman in her 60s who made her coming out in the media at the turn of the century.
