I Am An Actor, Song Seung-hwan

Song Seung-hwan is a unique figure. Though widely recognized as a "celebrity," he’s not someone easily defined in a single phrase. For senior audiences familiar with home dramas, he is remembered as a “Talent (the old Korean way of saying celebrity)” who frequently appeared in numerous TV dramas and occasionally hosted variety shows. For middle-aged audiences who are more into performing arts, he is known as a veteran stage actor and, further, as the mastermind behind Nanta, a globally acclaimed performance. And for younger generations unfamiliar with his earlier work, he is seen as the world-class director who brilliantly orchestrated the opening and closing ceremonies of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Depending on the generation and one’s range of cultural experience, Song Seung-hwan is remembered in many different ways.

Marking the 60th anniversary of his debut, he has published an illustrated essay titled I Am an Actor, Song Seung-hwan.

What he writes about, however, is not the bright and glamorous moments, but the chaotic times that existed in between. One might expect the book to be packed with dense narratives, given the richness of his life story—but it is not. The day he left everything behind and moved to the U.S., the dreamlike moment when Nanta made its way to Broadway, the night sky of PyeongChang lit up by drones, and the emotional day he returned to the stage after overcoming sudden vision loss—all of these are described in short, restrained, and calm prose. A long life captured in brief writings—the gaps between the lines are filled with illustrations.

Na So-yeon, a young illustrator and former art journalist, brings Song’s journey to life with warm, characterful drawings reminiscent of Jean-Jacques Sempé. In line with the concept of an "illustrated essay," the book’s format resembles that of a picture book more than a typical paperback, enhancing its unique charm.

송승환은 독특한 인물이다. 널리 알려진 ‘연예인’이지만 막상 그가 어떤 사람인지 한마디로 정의하기는 쉽지 않다. 안방극장에 익숙한 시니어 층에게는 많은 드라마에 출연했고 간간이 쇼 프로그램 MC도 맡았던 동년배의 ‘탈랜트’로 기억된다. 공연 좀 봤다는 중장년층은 베테랑 연극배우로, 나아가 〈난타〉라는 세계적 퍼포먼스의 기획자로 그를 기억한다. 그의 옛 모습을 알지 못하는 청년들에게는 평창 동계올림픽 개․폐회식을 멋들어지게 연출한 세계적 감독의 이미지가 형성되어 있다. 이렇듯 세대에 따라, 문화적 체험의 폭에 따라 다양하게 기억되는 그가 데뷔 60주년을 맞아 『나는 배우다, 송승환』이라는 그림에세이를 펴냈다.

그가 써내려간 건 빛나고 화려했던 순간이 아니라 그 순간들 사이에 존재했던 혼돈의 시간들이다. 사연이 많은 만큼 글도 빽빽할 것 같지만 그렇지 않다. 모든 것을 내려놓고 미국으로 떠나던 날도, 〈난타〉가 브로드웨이에 진출하고 평창 밤하늘이 드론으로 빛나던 꿈같은 순간들도, 갑작스러운 시각장애를 딛고 다시 무대에 오르던 날의 감동도 모두 절제된 문장으로 짧고 담담하게 서술되어 있다. 짧은 글에 담긴 긴 시간! 그 여백을 채워주는 건 그림이다. 미술기자 출신의 젊은 일러스트레이터 나소연이 장 자끄 상페를 연상시키는 따뜻하고 개성 있는 드로잉으로 송승환의 지난 시간들을 시각화한다. 그림에세이라는 콘셉트에 맞게 책의 판형도 여느 단행본들과 달리 상페 스타일의 그림책에 가깝다.
