I Think Even This Can Be Enjoyable

Theater actor Kim Eun-han is a “one-person theater,” bringing the stage wherever there is an audience. Performing under the name Mammoth Mermaid, he has been creating and presenting works at the Seoul Fringe Festival annually since 2015, earning recognition from fellow theater artists for his originality. His first book, I Think Even This Can Be Fun, is both an essay on the daily life of a writer-actor who creates theater in his own way and a creator’s notebook, showing how restaurants, homes, bookstores, subways, and even streets can become a stage.

How does someone who is always rehearsing the next performance and imagining the next stage see the world? Following Kim Eun-han’s whimsical imagination and delicate humor, even a subway station instantly transforms into a tiny stage. From a small rubber band on a desk, cute and eerie stories emerge. Though he sometimes questions how long he can keep creating, he continues with “the madness of treating a bowl of ramen as a performance” and “the art of making as a maker,” improvising and acting out as he goes. Always bringing ideas that surprise and delight, he reminds us that even ordinary moments can be fun. His motto after countless performances? “Every opportunity is a crisis!”

연극 배우 김은한은 관객이 있는 곳으로 찾아가 그 자신이 극장이 되는 ‘1인 극장’이다. 활동명은 매머드머메이드. 2015년 활동을 시작해 매년 서울프린지페스티벌에 꾸준히 작품을 올리고 있는 그는 동료 연극인에게 인정받는 독창적인 창작자다. 김은한의 첫 책 『이런 것도 즐겁다고 생각합니다』는 자기만의 방식으로 극을 만들어 온 작가·배우의 일상을 담은 에세이이자, 식당, 집, 책방, 지하철, 길거리마저 하나의 무대로 만들어 버리는 연극인의 창작 노트다.

언제나 다음 공연을 연습하며 그다음 무대를 상상하는 이는 어떤 시선으로 세상을 바라볼까? 김은한의 엉뚱한 상상력과 섬세한 입담을 따라가다 보면 지하철역이 순식간에 작은 무대가 된다. 책상 위에 놓인 작은 고무줄에서 귀엽고 무시무시한 이야기가 탄생한다. ‘언제까지 새로운 것을 만들어 낼 수 있을까?’ 엄살을 부리다가도 “라멘을 한 편의 극으로 취급하는 광기”로, “만드는 일을 만드는 사람”으로서, “시늉과 행세”를 하며 계속한다. ‘이런 것도 즐겁지’ 하면서 미처 상상하지 못한 기발하고 재미있는 것을 들고 온다. 쉼 없이 무대에 서 온 그의 모토는? “모든 기회를 위기로!”
