The novel begins with the world falling into unprecedented chaos due to the appearance of a hemorrhagic respiratory virus called ‘Rahib.’ First discovered in China, it was revealed to be deadly, accompanied by high fever and vomiting blood, and in severe cases, it could lead to death. As a result, all leaves and passes for military units in South Korea were suspended. Similarly, the anti-aircraft artillery positioned on the rooftop of a luxury hotel in Gangnam to defend the airspace of the capital region was also affected.

Jehoon, who is serving here, finds himself in a desperate situation after receiving a breakup notice from his girlfriend, Yeongju. He is so overwhelmed by his emotions that he dreams of deserting. The area around the military base is a flashy, bustling district, and right below the base are luxurious hotel facilities and restaurants. Despite sharing the same air, the fact that he has to live a completely different daily life from the people down there makes Jehoon’s longing for the outside world even more intense.


한국소설 중 좀비를 본격적으로 다룬 작품이 극히 드물었던 2012년 출간되어 독자들의 눈을 사로잡았던 『인플루엔자』가 문학동네 플레이 시리즈로 새롭게 출간되었다. 강남대로 한복판이 좀비떼로 뒤덮인다는 파격적인 설정과 더불어, 전 지구적 종말이 닥친 세계를 통과하는 청춘들의 모습이 밀도 높은 서사로 그려진다.

특히 이번 개정판은 폭력성에 치중하기 쉬운 좀비물의 특성을 보완하기 위해 서사의 중심을 탄탄히 잡고, 사랑하는 사람을 지켜내기 위해 분투하는 평범한 청춘의 단면을 높은 채도로 담아냈다는 점에서 의미가 깊다. 더불어 국외로부터 감염률 높은 호흡기 바이러스가 유입되어 팬데믹이 시작되고, 이후 백신 부작용으로 인한 좀비 사태가 발발해 계엄령이 선포되기까지의 흐름은 과거에 쓰였다는 사실이 믿기 어려울 정도로 바로 지금 우리 사회의 모습을 투영하고 있다.

소설은 출혈성 호흡기 바이러스인 ‘라히브’의 등장으로 전 세계가 미증유의 혼란에 빠진 상황에서부터 시작된다. 중국에서 처음 발견됐으며, 고열과 토혈을 동반하고 심할 경우 감염자를 사망에 이르게 할 정도로 치명적이라는 사실이 알려짐에 따라 대한민국 내 모든 군부대의 휴가 외박이 중지되었다. 수도권 영공방어를 위해 강남의 특급호텔 옥상에 설치된 대공포진지 역시 마찬가지다.

이곳에서 복무중인 제훈은 여자친구 영주로부터 결별에 가까운 통보를 받은 뒤, 탈영을 꿈꿀 정도로 절박한 심정에 처해 있다. 부대 주변은 화려한 번화가에, 바로 아래층에는 호화로운 호텔 시설과 레스토랑이 자리하고 있다. 같은 공기를 마시고 있음에도 그곳의 사람들과 전혀 다른 일상을 보내야 한다는 사실이 바깥을 향한 제훈의 갈망을 더욱 극심하게 만든다.
