Korean Folk Art Coloring Book: The Five Colors

This coloring book lets you color each design twice—once on bright white paper that brings out vivid colored-pencil hues, and once on beige paper with the texture of traditional hanji. It also features a special design inspired by Shin Saimdang’s works set against a black background. The designs in this book were created by the author, a traditional color-painting artist, drawing inspiration from old paintings that capture the free-spirited and imaginative ideas of Korea’s ancestors. Designed so that anyone can easily and simply enjoy folk painting with just colored pencils, the book includes 34 designs in total, each presented twice. Timeless folk-painting motifs—such as camellias, bay laurel blossoms, and peonies; butterflies, cranes, and divine turtles; grapes, peaches, and fans—each filled with auspicious wishes, can be colored two times.

After coloring, you can also view the original artworks that inspired the designs. The book concludes with a special design inspired by Shin Saimdang’s Grass and Insect Paintings (Chochungdo), set on a black background—a tribute to her ability to find beauty even in insects and wild grasses.
