Leaving It Unknown

Kim Gyeo-ul, who runs the YouTube channel 〈Winter Bookstore〉 with 300,000 subscribers and has been actively engaged in book-related work as a writer, booktuber, and radio DJ—self-proclaimed and widely recognized as a “reading instigator”—now publishes her first photo book, Leaving It Unknown.

Having studied philosophy in graduate school and refined her thinking and language, she places photographs alongside her writing in this book, revealing with greater clarity her perspective on the world.

For Kim Gyeo-ul, a camera is as close a companion as a book. She carries it wherever she goes, pressing the shutter in front of moments she wants to hold onto for a long time. She has consistently built a body of photographic work—so much so that she even runs a separate social media account for her photography—and her professionalism was recognized when her work was exhibited at a Leica Store in 2025. Leaving It Unknown brings together around ninety photographs and fifteen essays drawn from this accumulated time and practice.

30만 구독자를 보유한 유튜브 채널 〈겨울서점〉을 운영하며 작가, 북튜버, 라디오 DJ 등 자칭타칭 ‘독서 유발자’로서 책과 관련된 왕성한 활동을 이어오고 있는 김겨울. 그가 첫 사진책 『모르는 채로 두기』를 펴낸다. 대학원에서 철학을 공부하며 사유와 언어를 다듬어온 그는 이번 책에서 사진과 글을 나란히 놓고, 세계를 바라보는 자신의 태도를 한층 또렷하게 드러낸다.

김겨울에게 카메라는 책만큼이나 가까운 존재다. 이동할 때마다 카메라를 들고 다니며, 오래 간직하고 싶은 순간 앞에서 셔터를 누른다. SNS 사진 계정을 따로 운영할 만큼 꾸준히 쌓아온 그의 작업은 2025년 라이카 스토어에서 전시되었을 정도로 전문성을 인정받았다. 『모르는 채로 두기』는 그렇게 축적된 시간 속에서 길어 올린 90여 장의 사진과 15편의 글을 엮은 결과물이다.
