Midnight Swan

The protagonist, Nagisa, works as a showgirl at a transgender bar in Shinjuku, Tokyo, while hiding the fact that she is transgender from her family. One day, her mother, who has contacted her after a long time, asks Nagisa to temporarily look after her niece, Ichika, and sends her to Tokyo without warning. When Ichika arrives to find her uncle, she is taken aback by Nagisa’s appearance—wearing a short skirt and high heels. Despite Ichika’s confusion, Nagisa feels a sense of pity for her niece, who has closed herself off emotionally due to the abuse and neglect she experienced from her parents.

Before coming to Nagisa, Ichika had learned ballet by chance in Hiroshima, but after being introduced to an illegal part-time job by a friend, she ends up getting caught by the police. After hearing the full story, Nagisa realizes that Ichika has a natural talent for ballet and regrets not having been more attentive to her in the past. As she supports Ichika’s dream of pursuing ballet and finding a way into the world, Nagisa begins to nurture her own dream of becoming a "mother" for Ichika.

주인공 ‘나기사’는 자신이 트렌스젠더라는 사실을 가족들에게 숨긴 채 도쿄 신주쿠에 위치한 트랜스젠더 바에서 쇼걸로 일하고 있다. 그러던 어느 날 오랜만에 연락을 해온 엄마는 조카 ‘이치카’를 잠시 맡아달라는 부탁을 하고는 무작정 나기사가 있는 도쿄로 이치카를 올려 보낸다. 삼촌을 찾은 이치카는 짧은 치마에 하이힐을 신은 나기사의 모습을 보고 당황하고, 나기사는 부모의 학대와 방치로 인해 마음의 문을 닫아버린 이치카에게 약간의 연민을 느낀다.

나기사를 찾아오기 전 히로시마에서 우연한 기회로 발레를 배웠던 이치카는, 본격적으로 레슨을 받기 위해 친구가 소개한 불법 아르바이트를 하다가 경찰에 잡혀 간다. 사건의 전말을 들은 나기사는 이치카에게 발레에 소질이 있음을 발견하고, 그간 무심했던 자신을 책망한다. 나기사는 발레를 통해 세상으로 나아가려는 이치카를 응원하면서, 이치카를 위해 “엄마가 되고 싶다”는 꿈을 키워가게 된다.
