Director Lee Chang-dong's third film, "Oasis," which won the Best Director Award and Best New Actress Award (Moon So-ri) at the 59th Venice International Film Festival in 2002, has been published as a screenplay collection, 22 years after its release. This book includes recommendations from the two lead actors, Moon So-ri and Sol Kyung-gu, praised by critics both domestically and internationally, as well as author's notes containing the initial ideas and concepts of "Oasis," the director's handwritten script drafts, and numerous still photographs that capture the atmosphere of the filming set, known for its difficulty and complexity.

In particular, this screenplay collection features a special interview conducted by author Jo Seon-hee, who interviewed director Lee Chang-dong as the editor-in-chief of the film weekly magazine "Cine21" at the time of the film's release in 2002, and reunited with him 22 years later in 2024. "Oasis" tells the story of a love between a princess with cerebral palsy and a social misfit and ex-convict named Jong-du, sparking considerable controversy since its release. The film depicted societal views on disability, sexuality, and violence in a painfully realistic manner, sharply addressing critical issues and guiding the audience to discover the intentions behind its controversial scenes.

Through this screenplay collection, director Lee Chang-dong elaborates for the first time on the inspiration behind the story of "Oasis," the creation of its characters, behind-the-scenes stories from the film's production, and most importantly, the questions and intentions he aimed to convey to the audience through the problematic scenes in "Oasis." Such statements reflect the director's consideration to guide viewers and readers to uncover the intentions hidden beyond the screen and his determination not to evade or ignore critical questions raised about the film over the years.

2002년 제59회 베니스 국제영화제에 초청되어 감독상과 신인여우상(문소리)을 수상한 이창동 감독의 세 번째 연출작 ‘오아시스’가 영화 개봉 22년 만에 각본집으로 출간됐다. 이 책에는 국내외 비평가들이 극찬한 두 주연 배우 문소리와 설경구의 추천사, ‘오아시스’의 최초 아이디어와 구상이 담긴 작가 노트, 이창동 감독이 직접 쓰고 그린 콘티 초고, 어렵고 난해하기로 유명했던 촬영 현장의 분위기를 느낄 수 있는 스틸 사진 등이 다수 수록되어 있다. 특히 이번 각본집에는 2002년 영화 개봉 당시 영화 주간지 《씨네21》의 편집장으로서 이창동 감독을 인터뷰했던 조선희 작가가 그로부터 22년이 지난 2024년에 이창동 감독을 다시 만나 진행한 특별 인터뷰가 수록되었다. ‘오아시스’는 뇌성마비 장애를 가진 공주와 사회부적응자인 전과자 종두의 사랑 이야기로 개봉 당시부터 적지 않은 논쟁을 불러일으킨 작품이다. 또한 장애와 성과 폭력에 대한 사회적 시선을 고통스러울 만큼 사실적으로 묘사하고, 첨예한 문제를 드러냄으로써 영화에 대한 평가를 극명하게 가르기도 했다. 이창동 감독은 이번 각본집을 통해서 ‘오아시스’라는 이야기를 떠올리게 된 계기, 그러한 캐릭터들을 창조하게 된 이유, 영화 제작 당시의 비하인드 스토리, 그리고 무엇보다 ‘오아시스’의 문제적 장면들에서 관객에게 전하고자 했던 질문과 의도 등을 처음으로 상세히 언급한다. 이와 같은 발언은 관객과 독자들이 스크린 너머에 감춰져 있던 의도들을 발견하도록 안내하고자 하는 감독의 배려이자 영화에 대한 그간의 비판적 문제제기를 에두르거나 회피하지 않겠다는 의지이기도 하다.
