■ Description
Author Cho Hae-jin, who has won major literary awards such as the Daesan Literary Award, the Lee Hyo-seok Literary Award, and the Baeksinae Literary Award, proves his solid literary prowess with his award-winning work "Meeting Loh Kiwan." After receiving the news of the adaptation of his work into a film, the book has returned to readers in a "remastered edition" after 13 years since its original publication.
"Meeting Loh Kiwan" has been praised for its "generous empathy and meticulous resolution" that surprisingly evoke sympathy for the fate of a North Korean defector wandering in a foreign land, while also convincingly demonstrating how universality is acquired in a novel through a style of reflection and mournfully dreamlike journey (Kwon Ye-seon). Since winning the Shin Dong-yup Literary Award in 2013, the novel has steadily been recognized as an important achievement in Korean literature that does not fade over time, firmly establishing its place in the literary world. It proudly made its mark in 2021 when it was jointly selected by KBS and the Korean Literary Critics Association as one of the "50 Novels of Our Time."
In this remastered edition, which coincides with its adaptation into a Netflix movie in March 2024, the book faithfully recalls the profound resonance of the original work while polishing some expressions to suit the recent sentiment, focusing on its immersive narrative and the universal emotions derived from it.
