Old Korea by British Artist Elizabeth Keith: Complete Restoration Edition

The book Old Korea, created by the renowned artist Elizabeth Keith and written by her sister, Elspet Keith, delicately and honestly captures the everyday lives and customs of the Korean people in the early 20th century. Their first visit to Korea was in 1919, just after the March 1st Movement, a time when Koreans, oppressed by Japanese rule, rose passionately and shouted for independence. This fervor is vividly conveyed in their work. Additionally, Elizabeth Keith’s sensitivity as a woman is evident in both her paintings and their accompanying explanations.

The "Complete Restoration Edition" is a monumental book that not only offers a full translation of Old Korea but also consolidates over thirty years of research and discoveries by the translator, Song Yeong-dal, who is a collector and researcher of Keith's works. This edition includes 85 of Keith's Korean-themed paintings, digitally restored to ultra-high definition and printed on high-quality art paper to faithfully replicate the originals. The cloth-bound cover adds to the book's refined quality.

Notably, the book features the portrait of Admiral Yi Sun-sin on page 299, which is considered the oldest existing portrait of the admiral and is the closest depiction of him, making it a significant historical find.

이번 '완전 복원판'은 이 <올드 코리아>를 완역하면서, 동시에 엘리자베스 키스 작품 수집가이자 연구자인 옮긴이 송영달이 삼십여 년간 발굴한 키스의 한국 소재 그림 일체와 연구성과를 집대성한 기념비적인 책이다. 키스의 한국 소재 그림 85점을 초고화질로 디지털화하고, 작품 도록용 종이에 인쇄하여 최대한 원본에 가깝게 구현했다. 또 천으로 두른 양장은 책의 품격을 한층 높인다.

특히 299쪽에 실린 '이순신 장군 초상화'(추정)는 추정한 바로는 현존하는 가장 오래된 초상화이자 실제 이순신 장군에 가장 가까운, 역사적인 발굴 작품이다.
