Satan's Tango

In 2025, Hungarian modern literature giant László Krasznahorkai was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee praised him for his "powerful and visionary works that awaken the power of art even in the face of the fear of destruction," noting that he had reintroduced the possibility of the "prophetic language" that modern literature had lost.

〈Satan's Tango〉 is one of Krasznahorkai's most famous works, and it was adapted into a renowned film of the same name in 1994 by the Hungarian auteur and internationally acclaimed director Béla Tarr. The film has since become a classic in cinematic history, beloved by filmmakers and cinephiles worldwide.

Set in 1980s Hungary, as communism was beginning to collapse, the story takes place in a small village that was once a collective farm, now sunk into poverty and distrust. Life in the village is stagnant and hopeless until rumors start circulating: the man, Irimiás, who was believed to have died a year and a half ago, is coming back.

His return, marked by an overwhelming charisma and the arrival of the autumn rains, fills the villagers with a bittersweet hope—perhaps they can escape their desperate lives. However, this hope is coupled with an undefined sense of fear and anxiety. Mysterious bell sounds echo without a bell, and invisible spiders weave webs, symbolizing the dread of the world's collapse. 〈Satan's Tango〉 portrays the relentless cycle of failure as the villagers' attempts to escape the shackles of their decaying existence inevitably lead them back into an eternal loop, painting a grim vision of apocalyptic despair.

Krasznahorkai’s masterful narrative explores the futility of escape and the inevitability of falling back into a vicious cycle, capturing the essence of human struggle against an unyielding, decaying world.

헝가리 현대문학의 거장 크러스너호르커이 라슬로가 2025년 노벨문학상을 수상했다. 노벨위원회는 “파멸의 공포 속에서도 예술의 힘을 다시 일깨우는 강렬하고 비전적인 작품”을 수상 이유로 밝히며, 그가 현대 문학이 잃어버린 ‘예언적 언어’의 가능성을 다시 보여주었다고 평가했다.

〈사탄탱고〉는 크러스너호르커이 라슬로의 대표작 가운데서도 가장 널리 알려진 작품으로, 헝가리의 작가주의 영화감독이자 전 세계 영화인들의 존경과 사랑을 한 몸에 받는 거장 벨라 타르에 의해 1994년에 동명의 영화로 만들어져 영화사에 길이 남을 걸작의 반열에 오르기도 했다.

공산주의가 붕괴되어가던 1980년대 헝가리. 해체된 집단농장의 마을에 남아 가난과 불신의 늪에 빠져 무기력한 삶을 보내던 이들 사이에 소문이 돌기 시작한다. 1년 반 전에 죽은 것으로 알려진 이리미아시가 마을로 돌아온다는 것이다.

압도적인 카리스마를 지닌 그가 가을장마의 시작과 함께 귀환한다는 소식에 마을 사람들은 절망적인 삶에서 탈출할 수 있으리라는 달콤한 꿈에 부푸는 한편, 무언지 알 수 없는 두려움과 불안감에 시달린다. 종 없이 들려오는 종소리와 보이지 않는 거미들이 친 거미줄이 세계의 몰락이라는 공포를 부추긴다. <사탄탱고>는 몰락한 삶의 굴레에서 벗어나고자 하는 모든 노력이 실패로 돌아가고 끝내 쳇바퀴에 다시 포박되어 영원한 악순환을 이루는 과정을 절망의 묵시화로 그려낸다.
