Seol Ja-eun, Chasing the Flame

The ‘Seol Ja-eun’ Series is Jeong Se-rang’s first historical novel, first mystery novel, and first book series. Set in the capital of Unified Silla, Geumseong, the story follows Seol Ja-eun, a Daesa (high-ranking official) of the Jipsabu (Office of House Affairs) as she solves mysterious cases unfolding around her.

Following the first book, 『Seol Ja-eun, Returns to Geumseong』 (2023), the sequel, 『Seol Ja-eun, Chasing the Flames』, continues the tale. Disguised as a man, Seol Ja-eun had left for Tang Dynasty to study in place of her deceased brother. Upon returning to Geumseong, she takes in Mok In-gon, a craftsman of fallen Baekje, as her guest. Together, they solve cases, eventually drawing the king’s attention, leading to her secret appointment as a Daesa of the covert Jipsabu.

‘설자은 시리즈’는 정세랑이 펴낸 첫 역사소설이자 첫 추리소설, 그리고 첫 시리즈이다. 통일신라시대의 수도 금성을 배경으로, 집사부 대사 설자은이 주변에서 일어나는 미스터리한 사건들을 해결해나가는 이야기를 담고 있다. 1권 『설자은, 금성으로 돌아오다』(2023)에 이어 출간된 『설자은, 불꽃을 쫓다』는 남장을 하고 죽은 오빠를 대신해 당나라로 유학을 떠난 설자은이 금성으로 돌아와 망국 백제 출신 장인 목인곤을 식객으로 들여 함께 사건들을 해결하다 왕의 눈에 띄어 어둠 속에서 암약하는 집사부의 대사로 임명된 이후의 이야기를 그린다.
