Snow and the Pebble

「The Snow and the Pebble」 by Wi Soo-jung has been selected as the Grand Prize winner of the 49th Yi Sang Literary Award. Described by literary critic Shin Soo-jung as a story in which “the dead plan the journey of the living, and the living willingly carry out their promises to the dead,” the novel draws readers into its piercingly beautiful snowy landscape and the distant truth hidden within it.

In this remarkable work, quietly yet relentlessly falling snowflakes and pebbles that seem capable of shattering anything they strike stand in stark contrast while also overlapping. Through these opposing yet intertwined images, the novel speaks to us—almost dangerously, irresistibly—about “life and death,” which may, in the end, share the same face.
