Film director Yang Young-hee, who captivated both audiences and readers with the conclusion of her family documentary trilogy in <Soup and Ideology>, now mesmerizes them with her first full-length novel, 『Turning off the Camera to Write』. Set against the backdrop of Chosun University, known as the "supreme shrine of national education" under the control of the General Federation, the novel attracted significant attention for offering a glimpse into the daily life of Chosun University veiled during its release in Japan. The protagonist, Mi-young, enters Tokyo's Chosun University with a grand dream of joining a theater troupe after graduation. However, the strict rules of dormitory life, constant self-reflection and mutual criticism, and the predetermined career path after graduation make the school feel like a kind of prison. Mi-young rebels against the oppression of the organization and stands firm as a controversial figure, refusing to compromise. Meanwhile, she is shocked by the notion of "freedom" beyond the wall when she meets Guroki Yoo, a Japanese male student from Musashino Art University next door. In this novel set in the 1980s, Mi-young pushes forward her dreams and love in the face of rampant sexism, totalitarianism within the school, and xenophobia outside, depicted vividly through the eyes of the character Mi-young, who reflects the author herself. The author's firsthand experiences allow for detailed and realistic descriptions, injecting a sense of reality into the work as a form of testimony. Despite potentially solemn subject matter, the story unfolds cheerfully with the author's characteristic humor and sensitivity.

가족 다큐멘터리 3부작에 마침표를 찍은 <수프와 이데올로기>, 그 장대한 과업을 정리한 산문집 『카메라를 끄고 씁니다』로 관객과 독자를 동시에 사로잡은 영화감독 양영희의 첫 장편소설. 총련 산하의 ‘민족교육의 최고 전당’ 조선대학교를 무대로 하는 소설은, 일본 출간 당시 베일에 싸인 조선대학교의 일상을 엿볼 수 있다는 점에서 큰 화제를 불러 모았다. 주인공 미영은 졸업 후 극단에 들어가리라는 원대한 꿈을 안고 도쿄의 조선대학교에 입학한다. 그러나 엄격한 규율의 기숙사 생활에 매일같이 이어지는 자기반성과 상호 비판, 졸업 후 본인 의사와 상관없이 정해지는 진로까지, 학교는 일종의 감옥과도 같았다. 미영은 조직의 억압에 반발하고 동급생과 마찰을 일으키는 등 요주의 인물로 낙인찍히면서도 자신을 굽히지 않는다. 한편으로 옆 학교인 무사시노미술대학의 일본인 남학생 구로키 유와 만나면서 담장 너머의 ‘자유’에 충격을 받는다. 1980년대를 배경으로 한 소설에서 미영은 만연한 성차별과 더불어 학교 안에서는 전체주의, 바깥에서는 배타주의에 맞서며 꿈과 사랑을 밀어붙인다. 저자는 자신을 투영한 미영이라는 인물의 눈으로 조선대학교라는 조직의 내밀한 단면과 재일조선인이 처한 현실, 북한 주민들의 참혹한 실상까지 생생하게 그려낸다. 겪어본 자만이 가능한 구체적인 묘사는, 일종의 증언으로 작품에 현실감을 불어넣는다. 자칫 엄숙하게 흘러갈 법한 내용이지만, 특유의 유머러스하고 감각적인 문장으로 스토리는 경쾌하게 전개된다.
