Changing and Unchanging - Ultimately unchanging.
How old are Street Guns really? Their music, living in 2024, resonates with a vivid retro sound reminiscent of the United States in the 1950s. With lyrics like 'Combing my hair with pomade, wearing 50s Western shirts, and putting on blue suede clipper shoes' (Street Guns song, from [ROCKABILLY TIME]), Street Guns exude a cool old-school charm at first glance.
Having evolved from a precursor rockabilly band in 2001, Street Guns, formed in 2013, is the band that first established the genre 'Rockabilly' in South Korea. They go a step further, embodying the 'Old School Culture' (vinyl LPs, old-school cars, old-school tattoos, barber culture) that constitutes 'Rockabilly' and even serve as the main organizers of the 'Retro Festival,' filled only with that culture. Moreover, they even triumphed over Western bands in the global band competition [Hard Rock Rising] hosted in the United States, becoming the first Asian band to claim victory as the 'Korean-style Rockabilly.'
Street Guns' musical journey itself is the 'Rockabilly' genre. Having received countless questions like "What is Rockabilly?" the band Street Guns presented a delightful 'Rockabilly Manual' to listeners through music. The 2024 EP [Rockabilly Time] by Street Guns captures the rockabilly daily lives of the five members (Tiger, Roy, Cheolsu, Gyugyu, Inseon) under the name 'Street Guns.'
"When asked what Rockabilly is, explaining it in detail feels tiresome
So I've been saying it's like Elvis for years
That's why I prepared this song, it's rockabilly time"
- Lyrics from Street Guns song, [ROCKABILLY TIME]
Street Guns' instrument setup, with the most eye-catching large upright bass, adds to the authentic Rockabilly vibe. The lyrics, "Stop asking if it's a cello" when looking at the upright bass, reflects the humorous experiences in Rockabilly life. Especially, the lyrics, "If you want the sound of Guitar on Fire, then use that instrument," are reminiscent of an episode from the MBC music program, [Asian Top Band], which was filled with laughter. When judge Yoon Sang exclaimed, "How do they capture the original texture, color, and rhythm of Rockabilly?" Street Guns' guitarist Gyu-gyu shyly replied, "It's easy if you use that instrument (Gretsch guitar)," turning the studio into a sea of laughter.
Street Guns' new EP, [Rockabilly Time], is also a collection of works that capture the essence of each member. Tracks like the 1st track, [ROCKABILLY TIME], and the 5th track, [Not Knowing That Was the Last], feature lyrics and compositions by leader Tiger, as usual. However, in this EP, each track reflects the atmosphere and moments created by each member.
The 2nd track, [BATTLE YOURSELF], features bassist Roy, the 3rd track, [As Time Goes By], showcases guitarist Gyu-gyu, and the 4th track, [Good Youth], presents vocalist Cheol-soo's lyrics and compositions. While the title track, [Rockabilly Time], defines the original Rockabilly sound, each of the other tracks mixes various musical attempts based on Rockabilly, unraveling the personal narratives of each member who has contributed to the Rockabilly genre over a long period. As these narratives come together, they naturally embody the essence of the band Street Guns.
In 2024, Street Guns, the band still spearheading Korean Rockabilly, continues to rise. Their EP title, [Rockabilly Time], reflects their dedication to capturing their Rockabilly lifestyle. Instead of using the correct spelling 'Rockabilly,' they opted for the spelling 'Lockabilly,' which they have used interchangeably in their daily lives, for both the EP title and the title track.
The five members of Street Guns, who infuse the world with the charm of the unchanging old school, exude their individual colors. Their latest songs, created with a different approach from before, once again awaken the enduring charm of Rockabilly. In 2024 and beyond, let's enjoy the delightful Rockabilly guidebook they offer as they continue to create moments in Korean Rockabilly.
