The Adventure of the Waves in Nha Trang

It’s often said that “children love water.” But in reality, many children are afraid of it—and for some, that fear lingers into adulthood due to early experiences. So what should a caregiver do if their child is afraid of water? There’s no one right answer, but author Lee Dong-geon found a beautiful approach through his picture book 『The Adventure of the Waves in Nha Trang』, created especially for children.

The story begins with a family trip to Nha Trang, Vietnam—a globally beloved beach destination, especially popular among Korean travelers. Hoping to create joyful memories, the author confidently set off on the overseas vacation, expecting his child to enjoy the ocean. But contrary to expectations, the child was so afraid of the sea that they couldn’t even go near it and had to return without a single swim.

Though initially disappointed, the author chose to accept the child’s fear without judgment. Instead of pushing, he created a story that gently helped his child process the experience without staying stuck in anxiety. What happened after the child heard the story?
