Burke Devore, a middle-class head of household who had worked diligently for 23 years at a paper company, was suddenly laid off due to restructuring. Contrary to his expectations that he would quickly find reemployment given his career, he has been struggling with job hunting for two years now. After his unemployment benefits were cut off, he spent his days in despair. In order to restore his crumbling family and heal his wounded soul, he comes up with a shocking plan.

He places a fake job ad in a magazine for a manager position at a paper company he created virtually. His mailbox becomes filled with resumes from long-term unemployed individuals like himself. He then selects candidates who have better qualifications than him. If these people apply to the company where Burke submitted his resume, the HR manager would naturally choose one of them instead of Burke. Therefore, these people must disappear forever from the world. There’s no other choice.

그는 잡지에 자신이 가상으로 만들어낸 제지회사에서 관리자를 뽑는다는 가짜 구인 광고를 낸다. 사서함에는 그와 같은 장기 실직자들의 이력서가 가득 쌓이고, 그는 자신보다 더 좋은 조건을 가진 경쟁자들을 추려낸다. 만약 버크가 이력서를 넣은 회사에 이들도 지원한다면 인사 담당자는 당연히 버크가 아닌 이들 중 한 명을 뽑을 것이다. 그러니 이들은 세상에서 영원히 사라져야 한다. 어쩔 수가 없다.
