The Chinese Herring - English Version

This is the English picture book version of 《Chinese Herring Spines》, the eighth title in the Our Poetry Picture Book series, which adapts traditional children’s songs, children’s poems, and nursery rhymes into picture book texts. 「Chinese Herring Spines」 is a fairy tale poem included in the children’s poetry collection 〈The Four Claw Brothers (1957)〉 by poet Baek Seok.

Poet Baek Seok reimagined traditional stories with rhythm and humor, creating delightful fairy tale poems that both adults and children can enjoy. 전래동요, 동시, 어린이시를 그림책 텍스트로 삼아 펴내는 '우리시그림책'의 여덟 번째 책인 《준치 가시》의 영어그림책. 「준치 가시」는 시인 백석이 어린이들을 위해 지은 동화시집 〈집게네 네 형제 (1957)〉에 실린 동화시이다.

시인 백석은 옛이야기에 운율과 익살을 보태어 어른과 어린이 모두 즐길 수 있는 유쾌한 동화시로 재창조했다. 읽을수록 생명과 삶에 대한 깊은 통찰이 느껴지는 작품이다. 그림책 《준치 가시》는 전통 민화 기법을 통해 시인 백석의 시 세계를 새롭게 펼쳐내었다. 그림 작가 김세현은 이 책을 통해 전통적 아름다움과 가치를 전한다.
