The Discovery of Emotions

The essay 『The Discovery of Emotion: We All Must Become Artists』 by Park Shin-yang, a contemporary expressionist painter described as a “notable artist in Korea” by the Osaka Korean Cultural Center, has been published by Minumsa. The book guides readers on why emotions are important, how an artist’s emotional expression relates to ordinary people, and why one should reflect on their own emotions through art. Park explains that his experiences as an actor and with The Fourth Wall naturally extend into his painting practice.

The book includes approximately 60 reproductions of paintings and photographs, letters to his daughter, and art critiques by experts. Following his perspective that “expression is a human instinct” and that what matters more than technique is whether the work contains “heart,” he emphasizes that emotion and sensation are not separate from reason or judgment. It also traces his 40 years of vocal training since his days in the Theater and Film Department at Dongguk University and his 20-year-long support for younger artists through the Park Shin-yang FUN Scholarship.

The book is also linked to Park Shin-yang’s Exhibition Show: The Fourth Wall, which gained attention as Korea’s first “theatrical exhibition” at the Sejong Center Art Museum. The exhibition drew 30,000 paying visitors at the 2023 mM Art Center solo show, and was later featured in special exhibitions at the Osaka Korean Cultural Center in 2025 and the Incheon Art Show. The book explains his motivation for creating a new genre that fuses theater and exhibition.

현대 표현주의 화가로 “한국에서 주목받는 예술가”(오사카한국문화원) 박신양의 에세이 『감정의 발견: 우리는 모두 예술가가 되어야 한다』가 민음사에서 출간되었다. 왜 감정이 중요한가, 예술가의 감정 표현이 평범한 우리와 무슨 관계인가, 예술을 통해 왜 자신의 감정을 돌아보아야 하는지 안내한다. 배우로 지낸 시간과 ‘제4의 벽’의 경험이 그림으로 이어진다고 말한다.

그림과 사진 약 60점의 도판, 딸에게 보내는 편지, 전문가들의 미술평론도 수록했다. “표현은 인간의 본능”이며 기교보다 “마음이 담겨 있느냐”가 중요하다는 관점을 따라, 감정과 감각이 이성·판단력과 동떨어진 게 아니라는 점을 짚는다. 동국대학교 연극영화과 시절부터 40년간의 발성 연습, 20년째 ‘박신양FUN장학회’로 후배를 응원해 온 태도도 함께 담았다.

세종문화회관 미술관에서 국내 최초 ‘연극적 전시’로 화제를 모은 ‘박신양의 전시쑈: 제4의 벽’의 구상과 실천도 연결된다. 2023년 mM아트센터 초대전에 유료 관객 3만 명이 찾았고, 2025년 오사카한국문화원 초대 특별전, ‘인천아트쇼’ 초대전 등 전시 이력과 함께, 연극과 전시를 융합한 새로운 장르를 결심한 이유를 책에서 설명한다.
