The Ghost of the Jeoksan-gaok

The fourth book of the "Modern Literature Pin Genre" series with the most modern and sharp writers of Korean literature of the time, Cho Ye-eun's "The Ghost of the Jeoksan-gaok." "The Ghost of the Jeoksan-gaok" is a revised and published work published in the December 2023 issue of "Modern Literature," and it is his new novel depicting the "horror" of secrets hidden in the dreary house that was built by an enemy, which symbolizes Japanese colonial rule, and the "solidarity" of Yutaka, Park Joon-young and Hyun Un-joo.

Kanemoto, a wealthy Japanese merchant based in Japanese colonial era and Joseon, and his only son, Yutaka, are hateful and cursed to Jun-young, a Korean caregiver. For Jun-young, who struggles to survive as a colonized citizen, Kanemoto's red wall house represents the height of luxury and the remnants of resentful Japan. After learning that Yutaka, who thought he revealed his sensitive and violent tendency as self-harm due to his infirmity, was actually being exploited by his father, Jun-young feels a bond mixed with compassion for Yutaka.

Leter, Jun-young's maternal granddaughter, Hyun Un-joo, unfolds at the present point in the 2020s. It solves the situation of being defenseless against the subtle violence of her husband, Woo Hyung-min, who seeks death insurance under the guise of marriage, using the genre element of horror. In addition, the specter of Yutaka, who has existed in the red wall house for generations, frequently reveals its existence in front of Un-joo, and she thinks she's going crazy because of the terrible specter. One day, Un-joo had a dream that she becomes an maternal grandmother and know the reality of Yutaka, and Yutaka whispers the words that he has been holding in his heart. "I will be the one to kill my father."

일제강점기, 조선 땅에 자리 잡은 유복한 일본인 상인 가네모토와 그의 외아들 유타카는 조선인 간병인인 준영에게는 밉고 저주스러운 존재다. 피식민지 백성으로서 생존에 허덕이는 준영에게 가네모토의 붉은담장집은 사치스러움의 극치이자 원망스러운 일본의 잔재를 상징한다. 병약한 탓에 예민하고 폭력적인 성향을 자해로 드러내는 줄로만 알았던 유타카가 실은 양자로 그의 아버지에게 착취당하고 있다는 사실을 알게 된 후, 준영은 유타카에게 연민이 뒤섞인 유대감을 느낀다.

시대를 거슬러, 2020년대 현재 시점에서 전개되는 준영의 외증손녀 나(현운주)의 이야기로 전환된다. 결혼을 빙자하여 사망 보험금을 노리는 남편 우형민의 은근한 폭력에 무방비상태로 놓인 상황을 호러라는 장르적 요소를 활용해 풀어낸다. 또한 수 세대를 거슬러 붉은담장집에 존재해온 유타카의 망령은 내 앞에 수시로 그 존재를 드러내고 나는 몹쓸 망령 때문에 자신이 미쳐간다고 생각한다. 꿈속에서 나는 외증조모가 되어 유타카의 실체를 알게 되고 유타카는 나에게 마음속에 품어왔던 말을 속삭인다. “아버지는 내가 죽일 거야.”
