The Land of Youth

This novel explores the pressing societal issues we face today—aging populations, declining birthrates, the normalization of AI, rapid technological advancement, rising hatred and discrimination, increasing numbers of immigrants, and the debate around death with dignity—by painting vivid portraits of a future society through the diary of its protagonist, Yoo Nara.

In a near-future Korea, where the majority of the population is elderly due to the lasting effects of low birthrates and aging, 29-year-old Nara struggles to find her place in a world where younger individuals and machines have taken over most roles. Even her few personal relationships are far from smooth. Her only family, her mother, shares awkward three-minute phone calls with her. Her roommate, Eliya, a second-generation immigrant, wields her status as an officially recognized “socially vulnerable person” in ways that unsettle Nara emotionally. Isolated and weary, Nara often finds herself wondering about her Aunt Mina—once the light of her childhood, now vanished without a trace.

이 소설은 지금의 우리들에게 주어진 시대적 과제—고령화, 저출생, AI의 일상화, 급격한 기술 발전, 극단적 혐오와 차별, 늘어나는 외국인 이민자, 존엄사 등—가 현실이 된 미래 사회의 여러 단면들을 주인공 유나라의 일기를 통해 그려내고 있다.

저출생 고령화의 여파로 노인이 인구의 대다수를 차지하는 근미래 한국. 스물 아홉의 나라는 자기보다 더 젊은 사람들과 기계에게 대체되는 삶이 버겁다. 몇 안 되는 좁은 인간관계도 순탄치 못하다. 유일한 가족인 엄마와는 단 3분의 통화도 어색한 사이이고, 룸메이트 엘리야는 이주 2세대라는 ‘공인된 사회적 약자’의 지위를 무기 삼아 나라의 마음을 어지럽힌다. 외로운 현실 속에서 나라는 유년 시절의 빛이었으나, 이제는 연락조차 닿지 않는 민아 이모의 행방을 늘 궁금해한다.
