Geoff Dyer, who has come to consider himself in the twilight years of his life, or at least in the final phase of his career as a writer, focuses on the works produced by geniuses nearing the end of their careers in this book. One of the first things that stands out is Dyer's signature talent for wide-ranging knowledge. The book introduces a variety of music, ranging from Beethoven and Bob Dylan to ambient music and jazz, while also delving into painting and photography, featuring figures like William Turner, Giorgio de Chirico, and Edward Weston.

In the literary world, which is Dyer’s area of expertise, countless authors are naturally mentioned. However, Last Days does not merely present these many figures and anecdotes; it arranges them within a common thread. The external aspect of this thread is composed of the weariness and loneliness Dyer himself feels as his own life nears its end. For example, there are few other writers who could describe Friedrich Nietzsche’s final years in such an emotionally evocative way as Dyer does here—perhaps only Michel Schneider, the author of Glenn Gould: Piano Solo.
