The Place Where I Left My Heart: Stories of Mom-and-Pop Stores Around the World

Painter Lee Mi-kyung has been beloved for over 25 years for her warm, nostalgic illustrations of mom-and-pop stores.
Since the publication of her first book, 〈The Days of Mom-and-Pop Stores That Made Us Happy with Just a Coin〉 in 2017, her beautiful artwork has gained attention not only in Korea but also internationally, including features by the BBC in the UK. Her book has been translated and published in France, Taiwan, and Japan.

In this new book, the artist presents both illustrations and essays capturing the exotic yet familiar charm of small neighborhood shops she encountered across 19 countries over the past decade—including the UK, France, Morocco, Türkiye, Mongolia, Nepal, and Indonesia. The expansion of her work to global mom-and-pop stores began when she included depictions of local shops in each country where her previous book was published. Just as she once roamed Korea's alleyways in search of stores preserving the charm of old neighborhoods, she now explores the corners of the world in search of small shops that serve as both community hubs and everyday lifelines. Through her deepened writing, she conveys the warmth and nostalgia found in these shops around the world—and the pieces of her heart she had to leave behind in each one.

25년 넘게 그려온 정겨운 구멍가게 그림으로 꾸준히 사랑받아 온 화가 이미경. 2017년 첫 책 〈동전 하나로도 행복했던 구멍가게의 날들〉 출간 이후 그의 아름다운 작품은 국내는 물론 영국 BBC를 비롯해 세계 곳곳에서 주목받았으며, 프랑스, 대만, 일본에 번역 출간되기도 했다.

이번 책에서 작가는 지난 10여 년간 영국, 프랑스, 모로코, 튀르키예, 몽골, 네팔, 인도네시아 등 19개국에서 만난 이국적이고도 친숙한 세계의 구멍가게 작품을 글과 함께 담았다. 프랑스, 대만, 일본에서 책이 출간되었을 때, 그 나라의 구멍가게를 하나씩 그려 책에 담은 것을 계기로 작가의 작품은 세계의 구멍가게로 확장되었다. 한국에서 골목골목 옛 모습을 그대로 담은 구멍가게를 부러 찾아갔듯 이번에도 세계의 골목골목을 누비며 마을의 사랑방이자 삶의 현장이 되어 주는 구멍가게를 찾았다. 세계의 구멍가게에서 마주한 따스함과 향수, 그곳에 두고 올 수밖에 없었던 마음을 한층 더 깊어진 글로 담았다.
