The Wind Blows, Go by Han Kang (2024 Nobel Prize Winner)

The fourth novel by Han Kang, the author of "The Vegetarian," is about those who desperately had to breathe on the boundary between life and death. The story of people who run into each other and get hurt as if they were in a fierce struggle to prove the truth about the death of a promising female painter.

The novel follows the memory and difficult steps of the narrator Lee Jung-hee, who asks the truth about two car accidents that took place 40 years apart at Misiryeong Pass at dawn.

In addition to the boundary between life and death, the origin of life, understanding and love for others, the appropriation of memories and their reconstruction, the identity of madness and dark desire in us, the strong will to live, and the deep gaze on nature and art are all melted together in this feature.

<채식주의자>의 작가 한강의 네 번째 장편소설. 삶과 죽음의 경계 위에서 간절하게 숨 쉬어야만 했던 이들의 이야기이다. 촉망 받던 한 여자 화가의 의문에 싸인 죽음을 두고, 각자가 믿는 진실을 증명하기 위해 마치 격렬한 투쟁을 치르듯 온몸으로 부딪치고 상처 입는 사람들의 이야기가 400여 페이지에 걸쳐 전개된다.

소설은 새벽의 미시령 고개에서 사십 년이란 시간의 간격을 두고 일어난 두 차례의 자동차 사고, 그리고 그에 얽힌 인물들의 내밀한 사연이 진실을 캐묻는 화자 이정희의 기억과 힘겨운 행보를 따라 전개된다.

삶과 죽음의 경계뿐 아니라 생의 기원, 타인에 대한 이해와 사랑, 기억의 전유와 그것의 재구성, 우리 안의 광기와 어두운 욕망의 정체, 삶에의 강렬한 의지, 자연과 예술을 대하는 곡진한 시선 등 그간 작가 한강의 문학에서 단편적으로 다뤄져왔던 요체들이 이번 장편에 함께 녹아있다.
