Hwang Bo-reum's novel, "Welcome to Hyunamdong Bookstore," won first place in the 2024 Japan Bookstore Awards (Translation Fiction category). The Japan Bookstore Awards, established in 2004, is a literary award in Japan where the winning work is selected through direct voting by bookstore employees for the "book they most want to sell." Since 2012, awards have also been given in the translation fiction category, and this marks the third time a Korean novel has won the top spot in this category, following Son Won-pyeong's "Almond" (2020) and "Counterattack in the Thirties" (2022). "Welcome to Hyunamdong Bookstore" was initially released as an e-book from Millie's Library but later became a paper book due to strong demand from readers. It has since become a bestseller worldwide, not only in Korea but also in countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, Singapore, and Brazil. In her acceptance speech for the Bookstore Award, author Hwang Bo-reum stated, "I started writing this novel when my heart was shaking, and things weren't going well." She continued, "Through characters who have withdrawn from the limelight but continue to live their lives, I wanted to convey that life goes on no matter which path you choose. I support everyone who seems to have deviated from their path, just like I did." Set in a nondescript alley in Seoul, the ordinary neighborhood bookstore, Hyunamdong Bookstore, becomes a sanctuary where people with big and small wounds and hopes learn to live together. 황보름 장편소설 『어서 오세요, 휴남동 서점입니다』가 2024년 일본 서점대상 1위(번역소설부문)를 수상했다. 일본 서점대상은 2004년 제정된 일본의 문학상으로, 서점 직원들의 ‘가장 팔고 싶은 책’ 직접 투표로 수상작이 선정된다. 2012년부터는 번역소설부문의 시상도 시작되었으며, 한국소설이 이 부문 1위를 수상한 건 손원평 작가의 『아몬드』(2020)와 『서른의 반격』(2022)에 이어 이번이 세 번째다. 『어서 오세요, 휴남동 서점입니다』는 밀리의 서재에서 전자책으로 먼저 출간된 후 독자들의 강한 요청으로 종이책이 되었다가, 이후 한국은 물론 영국, 미국, 호주, 싱가포르, 브라질 등 전 세계에서 베스트셀러가 된 기적 같은 이력의 소설이다. 황보름 작가는 서점대상 수상소감에서 “이렇게 살아도 되는지 마음이 흔들리고 일도 잘 풀리지 않을 때 이 소설을 쓰기 시작했다”며 “세상이 주목하는 자리에서 물러난 인물들을 통해, 어느 길로 가든 삶은 이어진다는 걸 말하고 싶었다. 내가 그랬던 것처럼 경로를 이탈한 것처럼 보이는 모든 사람을 응원한다”고 밝혔다. 서울 어디에나 있을 것 같은 동네의 후미진 골목길에 자리잡은 평범한 동네 서점, 휴남동 서점. 주인 영주를 비롯해 크고 작은 상처와 희망을 가진 사람들은 이곳을 안식처로 삼아 함께 살아가는 법을 배운다. 무언가 잃어버린 채 텅 빈 기분으로 하루하루를 보내고 있다면, 배려와 친절, 거리를 지킬 줄 아는 사람들끼리의 우정과 느슨한 연대, 진솔하고 깊이 있는 대화가 가득한 이 책을 만나보자.
