Whale Snows Down

In this collection of short stories, a total of nine short stories are included. The title piece, 〈Whale Snows Down〉, was featured in 《The Best of Worlf SF: Volume 2》 and was a candidate for the Rosetta Prize. It gives a voice to deep-sea creatures and reflects the awareness of ecological destruction and the hope for Earth's recovery. Paired with this story, 〈Ghost Forest Downs〉 shares the same theme, evoking the strong vitality of mushrooms and corals that grow in abandoned space habitats, symbolizing the healing power that might still take root even in a world ravaged by violence and pollution.

〈The Crow Flies In〉 reveals a woman's firm inner strength as she resists overwhelming violence, through the myth of the Death Messenger. 〈Looking at the Boulder〉 portrays those who resist the frequent attempts to erase nature, even as humanity, now living on servers, continues to engage in reckless development and indiscriminate consumption. These and other works combine timeliness with humor, offering a range of enjoyable short stories.

〈The Door to Spring and 〈Even If It's Just the Shell〉 offer a peculiar sense of comfort to those who have lost someone dear, by interpreting death as a transition to another world. 〈The Early Morning Train〉, which was conceived while the author was working on the screenplay and idea development for the film 〈Snowpiercer〉, is also included, showcasing a story born from that experience.

이번 소설집에서는 총 9편의 단편소설이 수록된다. 《세계의 훌륭한 SF 선집》에 실린 작품이자 로제타상의 후보작이었던 〈고래눈이 내리다〉를 표제작으로 실어, 심해 생물들에게 목소리를 부여하고 생태 파괴의 문제의식과 지구 회복의 염원을 담아낸다. 이 작품과 짝을 이루어 주제를 공유하는 〈귀신숲이 내리다〉는 버려진 우주 거주구에서 자라나는 버섯과 산호의 강한 생명력으로 모든 폭력과 공해로 파괴된 세계에마저 깃들 회복의 힘을 감각하게 한다. 감재사자의 신화를 통해 거대한 폭력에 저항하는 여성의 굳건한 내면이 드러나는 〈까마귀가 날아들다〉, 서버로 이주한 인류마저 난개발과 무분별한 소비로 인해 자연물을 삭제해버리려는 시도가 빈번한 와중에 이에 맞서는 이들을 담아낸 〈너럭바위를 바라보다〉 등 시의성과 유머를 갖춘 엽편도 두루 즐길 수 있다. 죽음을 다른 세계로의 전환으로 이해해볼 수 있는 〈봄으로 가는 문〉과 〈껍데기뿐이라도 좋으니〉 또한 소중한 사람을 잃어본 이들에게 묘한 위로를 전한다. 작가가 영화 〈설국열차〉의 시나리오 설정과 아이디어 작업을 하면서 자신만의 스토리를 궁리하며 기획된 〈새벽 기차〉도 수록되어 있다.
