Where No One Comes

『Where No One Comes』 is a novella by Cheon Seon-ran, expanding on the world introduced in her early short stories 「Can You Hear My Voice?」 (2019) and 「Do You Remember My Breathing?」 (2020). These works form the foundation for her 2025 novella 「Do You Know Us?」 (included in 『Embracing the Broken Universe』), completing a three-part narrative over six years.

Cheon Seon-ran uses this series to portray zombies not merely as symbols of horror but as mirrors reflecting the deepest loneliness of human existence. Her approach takes a step further from the idea of "the ethics of living in a way that saves you by saving me" (Jeong Woo-ju, 「From the Place of Loss—On Cheon Seon-ran」), exploring more profound themes of human connection.

Each of the three stories in the series confronts a zombie apocalypse from different times and places. The first story begins with a disaster originating from the onset of infection and collapse, which then spreads to a migrant spaceship, focusing on the moment of choice—what to save and what to destroy. The second story portrays those who fail to escape Earth, showing how they care for each other and explore how to continue living beyond mere survival. The third story takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, where beings neither human nor zombie still remember and preserve love long after humanity's demise.

All three stories are tightly linked by two central emotions: the inability to let go of loved ones and the commitment to live in a way that preserves and saves others.

『아무도 오지 않는 곳에서』는 천선란이 데뷔 초 발표한 단편 「제 목소리가 들리십니까」(2019)와 「제 숨소리를 기억하십니까」(2020)의 세계관을 확장해 집필한 중편 「우리를 아십니까」(2025, 『토막 난 우주를 안고서』 수록)에서 비롯되었다. 「우리를 아십니까」를 토대로 기존 두 단편을 각각 전면적으로 확장·개고해 중편으로 다시 썼고, 이로써 6년에 걸쳐 3부작 서사가 완성되었다. 천선란은 이번 연작에서 좀비를 단순한 공포의 상징이 아니라 인간 존재의 가장 깊은 고독을 비추는 거울로 삼으며, ‘너를 살리는 방식으로 내가 사는 윤리’(정우주, 「상실의 자리로부터―천선란론」)에서 한발짝 더 나아간다.

세 편의 이야기는 각각 다른 시공간에서 좀비 아포칼립스를 마주한다. 1부는 감염과 붕괴의 초입에서 시작된 재앙이 이주 우주선으로 번지며, 무엇을 살리고 죽일지에 대한 선택의 순간을 그린다. 2부는 지구를 탈출하지 못한 사람들이 서로를 돌보며, 어떤 마음으로 살아야 생존을 넘어 삶을 이어갈 수 있는지를 보여준다. 3부는 인류가 사라진 지구에서 인간도 좀비도 아닌 존재들이 멸망 이후까지 사랑을 기억하고 지속하는 모습을 그린다. 세 편은 모두 ‘사랑하는 이를 끝내 놓지 못하는 마음’과 ‘너를 살리는 방식으로 내가 살겠다는 마음’으로 단단히 이어진다.
