출장을 싫어하는 사람이 갑자기 유명해지는 바람에 너무 많은 출장길에 올랐다. 2022년, 소설 쓰고 번역하는 삶을 살던 정보라의 『저주토끼』가 부커상 국제 부문 최종후보에 올랐다. 2016년 한강의 맨부커상 수상 이후 화제의 소식이었다. 기괴하고 환상적이면서도 현실의 폭력과 부조리를 파고드는 정보라의 작품에 세계는 뜨겁게 반응했고, 그는 난데없이 세계 곳곳의 문학 현장에 불려 다니기 시작했다. 런던에서 시작해 바르샤바, 베를린, 우붓… 그렇게 4년 동안 15개국 32개 도시를 누비는 태풍 같은 해외 출장이 이어졌다.

힘들지만 드물고 귀한 이 출장길에서 정보라는 한국문학을 적극적으로 알리는 한편, 자신이 발 디딘 곳을 부지런히 보고 듣는다. 문학 행사에만 머무르지 않고 낯선 도시를 걸으며 그곳의 사람들과 역사, 사회적 현안에 눈길을 준다. 이 책은 정보라의 화려한 세계 진출 성공기도, 피곤을 호소하는 내향인의 출장기도 아니다. 세계문학의 무대 뒤편에서 마주친 뜻깊은 장면과 황당한 사건, 맛있는 것과 이상한 것, 그곳에서 보고 말하고 행동한 것들이 꾸밈 없이 빼곡하게 담긴 일종의 ‘정보라적 르포’다. 세계적인 문학상의 무대와 그 바깥에서 벌어지는 시위, 한국문학을 향한 뜨거운 관심과 그 한편의 무너져가는 세계를 따라가다 보면 소설가 박상영의 말처럼 우리가 “지금 이 순간 역사에 남을 작가의 탄생을 지켜보고 있다는 것”을 깨닫게 될지도 모른다.

A person who hates business trips suddenly became famous, and as a result, found herself embarking on far more trips than she ever could have imagined. In 2022, Bora Chung’s 『Cursed Bunny』, written by the author while living a life devoted to writing and translation, was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize. It was major literary news, following Han Kang’s win of the Man Booker International Prize in 2016. The world responded passionately to Chung’s work—strange and fantastical stories that nonetheless probe deeply into the violence and absurdities of reality—and before she knew it, she was being invited to literary events all over the world. Beginning in London and continuing through Warsaw, Berlin, Ubud, and beyond, a whirlwind of overseas trips followed, taking her to 32 cities in 15 countries over the course of four years.

Though exhausting, these rare and precious journeys gave Chung an opportunity not only to actively introduce Korean literature to the world, but also to diligently observe and listen to the places where she found herself. She went beyond literary events, walking through unfamiliar cities and paying attention to their people, histories, and pressing social issues. This book is neither a glamorous success story about Chung’s breakthrough onto the international literary scene nor a chronicle of an introvert complaining about the fatigue of business travel. Rather, it is a kind of “Bora Chung–style reportage,” candidly packed with meaningful encounters and absurd incidents she experienced behind the scenes of the global literary world, as well as delicious and strange things, and all that she saw, said, and did along the way.

Following the world of prestigious international literary prizes—and the protests unfolding beyond their stages—along with the passionate interest in Korean literature and, on the other hand, a world seemingly crumbling around it, readers may come to realize, as novelist Sangyoung Park put it, that we are “witnessing, at this very moment, the birth of a writer who will go down in history.”
