I Wrote That’s How It Was

소설가 김애란이 새 책과 함께 여름 인사를 건넨다. 최근 장편소설 『이중 하나는 거짓말』(2024)과 소설집 『안녕이라 그랬어』(2025)를 펴내며 허구의 세계 안에서 지금 한국사회의 풍경을 세밀하게 그리는 데 집중해온 작가가 이번에 새 이야기를 담아낸 그릇은 소설이 아니라 산문이다.

창작자로서 인공지능 챗봇 챗지피티의 등장을 지켜보며 인간이라는 존재 자체를 성찰하기도 하고, 사회인으로서 우리 모두가 함께 겪은 코로나 시기를 돌아보며 진정한 자립과 타인의 의미를 되새기기도 한다. 이 면면은 엄밀히 구분되기보다 서로 섞이고 간섭하며 영향을 주고받는다. 그 바탕에는 공통적으로 몸과 마음의 한계를 지닌 사람으로서의 스스로를 인정하는 겸허하고 유연한 태도가 깔려 있다.

Novelist Kim Ae-ran greets readers this summer with a new book. After recently publishing the novel 『이중 하나는 거짓말』 (2024) and the short story collection 『안녕이라 그랬어』 (2025), the author has focused on portraying the landscape of contemporary Korean society in meticulous detail within fictional worlds. This time, however, the vessel for her new stories is not fiction, but prose.

Through this very genre, in which the author’s own quiet voice resonates rather than that of a narrator in one of her novels, we encounter the vivid, multifaceted Kim Ae-ran who has written the works we have loved for so long. These facets reveal her as a person living an everyday life, a creator, and a member of society. As an ordinary person, Kim Ae-ran watches dogs running freely through a spacious retreat in Jeju Island, taking in green landscapes unlike those of the metropolis, and discovers new sides to people she had misunderstood for a long time.

As a creator, she reflects on what it means to be human while witnessing the emergence of AI chatbot ChatGPT. As a member of society, she looks back on the period of COVID-19 that we all experienced together, reconsidering the true meaning of independence and of other people in our lives. These different facets are not strictly separate; instead, they overlap, interact, and influence one another. Underlying them all is a humble and flexible attitude: an acceptance of herself as a person with limitations of both body and mind.
