《왜 띄어 써야 돼?》, 《왜 맞춤법에 맞게 써야 돼?》에 이은 우리말 그림책이다. 한자어라면 어렵고 싫은 훈이는 생일을 맞아 할머니가 직접 써 준 초대장을 친구들에게 나눠 준다. 하지만 ‘금일’을 ‘금요일’로 잘못 이해하는 순간, 달력의 생일 표시가 금요일로 옮겨 가고 친구들이 준비한 선물까지 사라진다.

‘우천 시’를 도시 이름으로 알아듣자 정체불명의 도시가 솟아오르고, ‘중식’을 중국 음식이라고 생각하자 온통 중국 음식뿐인 세상이 펼쳐진다. 노선이 ‘개편’된 버스는 ‘개가 편한 버스’로 변신한다. 훈이와 친구들이 한자어를 엉뚱하게 해석할 때마다 상상이 현실이 되는 소동을 통해 일상에서 사용하는 한자어의 뜻을 알아본다.

Hoon, who finds Sino-Korean words difficult and dislikes them, celebrates his birthday by handing out invitations written by his grandmother. But the moment he misunderstands geumil (meaning “today” or “this day”) as geumyoil (“Friday”), his birthday on the calendar shifts to Friday, and even the gifts his friends prepared disappear.

When Hoon mistakes ucheon si (“in case of rain”) for the name of a city, a mysterious city suddenly appears. When he interprets jungsik (“lunch”) as Chinese food, a world filled entirely with Chinese dishes unfolds before him. A bus whose route has been gaepyeon (reorganized) transforms into a “bus that is comfortable for dogs.” Each time Hoon and his friends misinterpret a Sino-Korean word, their imagination turns into reality, leading to a series of hilarious mishaps that help them discover the meanings of words used in everyday life.

The book shows that Sino-Korean words are not unfamiliar or difficult expressions, but are already woven throughout the Korean language we use every day.
