Modern Minhwa Coloring book with Colored Pencils: Animal

Minhwa, traditional Korean folk paintings, were created to ward off evil spirits, pray for blessings, and bring good fortune. They are artworks that reflect the warm and positive spirit of Korea’s ancestors. Among these traditions, this book focuses on Yeongsudo (靈獸圖), paintings that depict sacred and mystical animals.

Even without being flashy or extravagant, Yeongsudo carries the heartfelt wishes of past generations—for their families’ health, a prosperous life, protection from misfortune, and the arrival of good luck. The book reinterprets the unique symbolism of each animal through modern-style sketches: the tiger, a guardian spirit that protects the household with strength and righteousness; the dragon, which connects heaven and earth while safeguarding the nation and its people; the turtle, a wise creature symbolizing longevity and perseverance; and the crane, known for its noble and pure energy.

민화는 귀신을 물리치거나 복을 기원하고 길상을 위해 제작되었으며, 조상들의 따뜻하고 긍정적인 감성을 담고 있는 그림이다. 이 책은 그중에서도 신령스러운 동물들을 그린 ‘영수도(靈獸圖)’를 주제로 삼았다.

화려하거나 거창하지 않아도, 영수도 안에는 가족의 건강, 풍요로운 삶, 나쁜 기운을 물리치고 복을 불러들이고 싶은 조상들의 간절한 마음이 담겨 있다. 강인함과 정의로움으로 집안을 지키는 수호신인 호랑이, 하늘과 땅을 연결하며 나라와 백성을 지켜주는 용, 천천히 가지만 오래 사는 지혜로운 생명인 거북이, 고고하고 맑은 기운을 지닌 학 등 동물 하나하나에 담긴 특별한 상징을 모던한 감각의 스케치로 만들었다.
