연기와 연기 바깥에 관한 책이다. 저자는 배우이고 ‘예술이 우리를 구원할 것’이라고 말하지만, 사실 예술은 삶의 하중 위에서만 단단히 버티고 설 수 있다. 무대나 스크린 속에서 배우는 자신의 경험과 재능을 집중시켜 한순간에 터뜨린다. 반면 카메라 바깥의 삶에는 수많은 우연과 잉여가 널려 있다.

이 책의 1부는 카메라와 무대 안팎을 주로 다루는 에세이를 실었고, 2부는 공연과 전시 리뷰를 실었다. 1부와 2부의 가장 큰 차이는 문체다. 1부가 2부보다 8년쯤 뒤에 쓰였으니 시간 격차가 글쓰기 스타일을 바꾼 것일까. 그것도 이유 중 하나겠지만, 에세이와 리뷰라는 형식 차이도 있다. 영화와 드라마를 찍고 연극 무대에 서면서 쓴 글이지만 1부는 생활밀착형이다. ‘내’가 배역으로 만들어지는 과정을 드러내는 일상, 그걸 무대로 삼는다. 이어지는 2부는 늘 다른 사람의 무대를 찾아가는 관객으로서 쓴 리뷰와 비평들이다. 여느 비평들과의 차이점은 배우의 시선에서 현장 중심적 비평을 하며 감상적 어휘를 사용하지 않는다는 것이다.

This book explores acting and life beyond the stage and screen. The author, an actor, believes that “art will save us,” yet art itself can only stand firmly when supported by the weight of lived experience. On stage or screen, actors concentrate their experiences and talents into a single moment of expression. Outside the camera's frame, however, life is filled with countless coincidences, unexpected encounters, and seemingly unnecessary moments.

Part 1 of the book features essays primarily exploring life both on and off camera and stage, while Part 2 presents reviews of performances and exhibitions. The most noticeable difference between the two parts lies in their writing styles. Since Part 1 was written approximately eight years after Part 2, the passage of time may have influenced the author's style. However, the difference in literary form between personal essays and critical reviews also plays a significant role. Although the essays in Part 1 were written while the author was working on films, television dramas, and theatrical productions, they remain deeply rooted in everyday life. They use ordinary experiences as a stage to reveal the process through which the author's personal identity is transformed into a character.

Part 2, meanwhile, consists of reviews and critiques written from the perspective of an audience member who continually seeks out the stages and artistic works of others. What distinguishes these writings from conventional criticism is the author's perspective as a working actor. Rather than relying on sentimental language, the reviews offer practical, performance-centered observations grounded in firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the creative process.
