Our Neighborhood Library

The work features a writer—referred to simply as “I”—who goes to the neighborhood library every day to write fiction. The writer is developing a story about “Beongak,” a painter from the ancient Goguryeo kingdom. After experiencing a tragic incident, Beongak becomes a man of firm conviction, declaring that he will never paint anything he has not seen with his own eyes.

However, he is later forced by a nobleman to create a funerary mural under threat of death, and is specifically ordered to include an image of a dragon—one that Beongak had once captured during his lifetime, though its true appearance was never revealed. Torn between his principles and the danger to his life, Beongak revisits the memories of those who once joined him on the dragon hunt. He becomes consumed by questions about the existence of beings that cannot be proven physically, yet continue to survive through records and stories.

Meanwhile, in the present day, as “I” continues writing Beongak’s tale, a real dragon suddenly appears before him. Rather than inspiring the novelist, the dragon’s unpredictable presence constantly whispers about the writer’s desires and limitations, throwing him into confusion. Struggling with the burdens of being a novelist, “I” also becomes entangled with the people at the local library, leading him to reflect more deeply on the meaning of “writing” itself.

작품에는 매일 동네 도서관으로 출근해 소설을 쓰는 작가 ‘나’가 등장한다. 작가는 옛 고구려 화공인 ‘번각’에 대한 이야기를 구상하고 있다. 번각은 비운의 사건을 겪은 후 자신이 직접 본 것 외에는 절대 그리지 않겠다고 선언한 신념 있는 인물이다. 그러나 번각은 목숨을 볼모로 한 귀족의 묘화를 그려줄 것을 강요받게 되고, 그가 생전 포획했지만, 모습은 밝혀지지 않은 ‘용’의 그림을 반드시 포함할 것을 명받게 된다. 자신의 신념과 목숨이 걸린 위기 사이에서 번각은 오래전 용 사냥에 함께 나섰던 사람들의 기억을 마주하며 실체를 증명할 수 없지만, 기록으로 이어진 존재에 대한 고민에 휩싸이게 된다.

한편, 현실에서 번각의 이야기를 써나가던 ‘나’의 앞에 어느 날 실제 용이 나타난다. 제멋대로 나타난 용의 형상은 소설가에게 영감을 주기는커녕, 작가의 욕망과 한계에 대해 계속 속삭이며 그를 혼란스럽게 만든다. 소설가로서의 과제에 직면하여 고통을 느끼던 ‘나’는 와중에 동네 도서관 사람들과도 얽히며 점점 더 ‘쓰기’의 의미를 고뇌하게 된다.
