Snow Falling on Samilpo

특유의 정교하고 아름다운 문체로 삶에 대한 폭넓은 통찰을 보여주며 한국문학을 대표하는 작가로 자리매김한 김연수의 소설집 『눈 내리는 삼일포』를 문학동네에서 펴낸다. 『이토록 평범한 미래』(문학동네, 2022) 이후 4년 만에 묶어내는 일곱번째 소설집으로, 한층 스펙트럼이 넓어진 9편의 소설이 실렸다.

조선 후기 화가 심사정의 그림에 대한 가상의 일화를 담아내어 작가 특유의 역사적 상상력을 발휘해낸 소설(「눈 내리는 삼일포」)부터 야구와 서커스, 판소리 등 서로 멀어 보이는 키워드를 자연스레 꿰어나가며 우리 인생의 목격자는 다른 누구도 아닌 바로 우리 자신임을 울림 있는 목소리로 전하는 이야기(「우리 인생의 목격자」), 그리고 자신의 육체를 버리고 정신을 ‘업로드’하길 택한 손녀를 찾아가는 할아버지의 여정을 다룬 소설(「동풍이 어디로 흩어지는지」)처럼 근미래를 배경으로 섬세한 상상력을 보여주는 이야기까지, 이번 소설집에서 김연수는 어느 때보다 다채로운 소재를 아우른다.

Kim Yeon-su has established himself as one of the leading figures in Korean literature through his distinctive, refined, and beautiful prose, offering profound and wide-ranging insights into life. Munhakdongne now publishes his short story collection 『Snowy Samilpo』. This is his seventh collection of short stories, released four years after 『An Ordinary Future Like This』 (Munhakdongne, 2022), and it brings together nine stories that showcase an even broader literary spectrum.

From 「Snowy Samilpo」, a story built around an imagined episode concerning a painting by Sim Sa-jeong, a painter from the late Joseon period, in which the author’s characteristic historical imagination comes vividly to life, to 「Witnesses to Our Lives」, a moving story that naturally weaves together seemingly disparate elements such as baseball, circus, and pansori, conveying in a resonant voice that the true witness to our lives is none other than ourselves; and 「Where the East Wind Scatters」, a story set in the near future that follows a grandfather’s journey in search of his granddaughter, who has chosen to abandon her physical body and “upload” her consciousness—the collection embraces a more diverse range of themes and subjects than ever before, while showcasing Kim Yeon-su’s delicate and imaginative storytelling.

At the same time, Kim Yeon-su continues to grapple with questions about his work as a creator. What impact does art truly have on our lives? And if art has a practical purpose, what might that purpose be? The answers he has painstakingly arrived at through these endless questions are contained within this collection.
