The Social Lives of Birds

편혜영이 『어쩌면 스무 번』 이후 5년 만에 선보이는 소설집으로, 2022년 김승옥문학상 대상 수상작 「포도밭 묘지」를 포함한 8편의 단편을 실었다. 사회적, 심리적, 경제적으로 취약한 위치에 놓인 인물들이 저마다 삶의 어려움을 통과해 가는 과정을 따라간다.

「우리가 가는 곳」에서는 삶에서 사라지려는 여자와 실종 대행업자의 여정을, 표제작 「새들의 사회성」에서는 경찰서에서 피의자와 피해자로 재회한 고등학교 동창의 동행을 그린다. 「포도밭 묘지」는 상업고등학교 시절부터 사회 초년생 시절까지 서로의 좌절과 안간힘을 지켜본 네 사람의 우정을 다룬다.

생계와 노동, 상실과 관계의 실패를 겪는 인물들은 끝내 포기할 수 없는 희망과 우정을 붙든다. 서스펜스와 미스터리를 이어가면서도 인물들을 바라보는 온기와 유머, 애틋함과 슬픔을 더해 그간의 작품세계를 확장한 소설집이다.

Pyun Hye-young’s first collection of short stories in five years since 『Maybe Twenty Times』, featuring eight short stories including "Graveyard in a Vineyard," the winner of the 2022 Kim Seung-ok Literary Award. It follows characters in vulnerable social, psychological, and economic positions as they navigate various hardships in life.

In 『Where We Are Going』, the journey of a woman trying to disappear from life and a missing-persons agency worker is depicted, while the title story, 『The Sociality of Birds』, follows high school classmates who reunite at a police station as a suspect and a victim. 『Graveyard in a Vineyard』 explores the friendship of four people who witnessed each other's frustrations and struggles from their commercial high school days to their early working lives.

Characters experiencing livelihood struggles, labor, loss, and relational failures ultimately hold onto a hope and friendship they cannot abandon. While maintaining suspense and mystery, this collection expands the author's literary world by adding warmth, humor, affection, and sorrow toward her characters.
