산문집 『그랬다고 적었다』와 함께 김애란의 첫 산문집 『잊기 좋은 이름』의 개정판을 펴낸다. 지난 2019년에 출간되어 오랜 시간 독자들의 큰 사랑을 받은 산문집으로, 햇살이 내리쬐는 시골길, 잘 익은 빨간색 수박, 천천히 돌아가는 선풍기처럼 화려하지 않지만 우리 삶에 선선한 바람을 쐬어주는 것들을 떠올리게 하는 맑고 깊은 글이 담겨 있다. 지금의 삶을 긍정하는 사람의 시선이 곳곳에서 반짝이고, 김애란의 초기 소설에서 느낄 수 있는 유머러스함도 녹아들어 있어 더욱 반갑다.

이번 개정판은 차례를 전체적으로 새롭게 매만지고, 말 자체에 대한 작가의 남다른 관심을 보여주는 다섯 편의 글을 ‘단어 사전’이라는 별도의 제목으로 묶음으로써 김애란 특유의 시적인 여백을 천천히 따라갈 수 있도록 구성했다. 한 아이의 등단 소식이 마을 전체의 축제가 되는 작은 동네에서 무럭무럭 자라난 유년 시절부터 “삶의 앞통수와 뒤통수, 옆통수”(109쪽)를 보는 여러 일을 겪으면서도 끝내 삶을 체념하거나 포기하지 않는 태도를 갖추게 된 삼십대의 시절까지, 활기와 젊음으로 생동하는 작가의 빛나는 청춘 시절이 이 한 권에 담겨 있다.

The revised edition of Kim Ae-ran’s first essay collection, 『잊기 좋은 이름』, is being published alongside the essay collection 『그랬다고 적었다』. First published in 2019, the collection has long been cherished by readers. Its clear, profound writing brings to mind things that may not be glamorous—sunlight pouring down on a country road, a perfectly ripe red watermelon, a slowly turning electric fan—but that offer our lives a cool, refreshing breeze. Throughout the book, the perspective of someone who embraces life as it is now sparkles in many places, while the humor found in Kim Ae-ran’s early fiction is also woven into the essays, making this collection all the more welcome.

For this revised edition, the table of contents has been thoroughly reorganized, and five pieces that reveal the author’s distinctive interest in words themselves have been brought together under a separate title, “Word Dictionary.” The new arrangement allows readers to slowly follow the poetic spaces and pauses characteristic of Kim Ae-ran’s writing. From the author’s childhood, spent growing up in a small neighborhood where the news of a child’s literary debut becomes a celebration for the entire village, to her thirties, when, despite experiencing various events that taught her to see “the front, back, and sides of life’s head” (p. 109), she came to embrace an attitude that never ultimately resigns itself to or gives up on life, this single volume captures the author’s brilliant youth, alive with vitality and energy.
