Joseon Photo Studio: Baek to Joseon

복원왕의 두 번째 사진집. 저자는 오래된 흑백사진을 찾아 사진 속 시간과 장소를 조사하고 컬러로 복원하는 작업을 이어 왔다. 복원왕 유튜브 채널에서는 ‘조선시대’를 다룬 영상이 항상 높은 관심을 받았다. 사진 기술이 막 도입되던 시기에 남겨진 기록인 만큼 지금은 볼 수 없는 거리와 건물, 사람들의 모습을 생생하게 담고 있기 때문일 것이다.

AI를 활용해 흐릿해진 사진을 선명하게 만들고 색을 입히며 심지어 동영상으로까지 구현하는 등 사진 복원 기술은 빠르게 발전하고 있다. 하지만 복원왕은 여전히 사진을 직접 살피고 픽셀 하나하나를 다듬는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 더 쉽고 빠른 방법을 두고 오래 걸리는 길을 선택한 이유는 기술로 대신할 수 있는 부분이 늘어나더라도 사진에 남은 시간의 흔적까지 담을 수는 없다는 믿음 때문이다.

『조선 사진관』은 그렇게 한 장 한 장 정성껏 되살린 사진을 모은 책이다. 컬러로 처음 만나는 백여 년 전 조선은 흑백사진의 기록으로만 상상해 왔기에 그 모습이 생소하기도 하면서 동시에 어딘가 현재와 닮아있다. 복원왕은 사진을 복원하고 당시의 자료를 살펴볼수록 지금과 다른 차림새와 낯선 풍경 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 삶이 지금의 우리와 크게 다르지 않다는 것을 알게 되었다고 한다. 같은 공간에서 다른 시간을 살아갔을 뿐이라고.

The author has continued to seek out old black-and-white photographs, researching the time and places in which they were taken and restoring them in color. Videos about the “Joseon era” have consistently drawn high interest on Restoration King’s YouTube channel. Perhaps this is because these photographs, taken when photography was first being introduced, vividly capture streets, buildings, and people that can no longer be seen today.

Photo restoration technology is advancing rapidly, with AI now able to sharpen faded images, add color, and even turn photographs into videos. Yet Restoration King continues to examine each photograph by hand, refining it pixel by pixel. The reason for choosing this slower, more painstaking approach over easier and faster methods is the belief that, no matter how much technology can replace human effort, it cannot capture the traces of time preserved within a photograph.

『조선 사진관』 is a collection of photographs painstakingly brought back to life one by one. Seeing Joseon as it looked more than a century ago, now encountered in color for the first time, feels unfamiliar because we have long imagined it only through the record of black-and-white photographs. At the same time, however, something about it feels surprisingly familiar.

Restoration King says that the more photographs he restored and the more historical materials he examined, the more he came to realize that the lives of the people who lived amid unfamiliar landscapes and wore clothing so different from ours were not all that different from our own. They simply lived in a different time, in the same places we inhabit today.
