1945, during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
Band leader Kang-ok and his young daughter So-hee, street fighter Chil-sung, and Mal-nyeon, a woman who has endured countless hardships under colonial rule, are among many Koreans deceived by promises of lucrative work in Japan and transported to Battleship Island.
Upon arrival, they discover the horrifying truth: the island is a brutal labor camp where Koreans are forced to work in dangerous coal mines under inhumane conditions. Deep beneath the sea, they face exhausting labor, constant abuse, and the ever-present threat of deadly gas explosions.
As the war nears its end, Moo-young, an OSS operative affiliated with the Korean Independence Army, infiltrates the island on a secret rescue mission. Meanwhile, Japan's impending defeat leads the authorities to plan a final atrocity—eliminating the Korean laborers to conceal the crimes committed on the island.
Realizing the danger, Moo-young joins forces with Kang-ok, Chil-sung, Mal-nyeon, and the other Korean workers in a desperate attempt to escape.
On the hellish island known as Battleship Island, a fight for survival begins.
