우리 민족의 웅혼한 기상을 품은 이름, 홍범도. 장군은 대한독립군 총사령관이었지만, 어떤 자리에서도 주인공이 되기를 원한 적이 없었다. 조국의 독립을 위해 그와 함께 싸우며 기꺼이 목숨을 던진, 대부분 이름조차 남기지 못했던 <의병들>의 생각이 뇌리를 떠나지 않았기 때문이다. 특별히 내색하는 일은 결코 없었지만, 생사를 달리한 동지들 중에는 그의 아내와 장남도 있었기에 작가의 말처럼 “장군의 가슴에는 평생 개마고원의 서늘한 바람이 불었을 것”이다.

이 시나리오는 독립의 영웅 홍범도와 인간 홍범도의 모습을 동시에 보여준다. 뿐만 아니라그와 함께 싸웠으나 역사의 망각 속으로 스러져간 영웅들의 이름을 하나하나 호명한다. 기억의 시공간과 이름을 되찾은 그들은 금강산 단발령에서, 두만강에서, 개마고원과 연해주에서, 봉오동과 화룡에서 펄펄 살아 숨쉬며 행진하고, 싸우고, 노래하고, 춤춘다. 그것은 거대한 독립의 춤, 해방의 춤이다.

Hong Beom-do—the name that embodies the indomitable spirit of our people. The General was the Commander-in-Chief of the Korean Independence Army, but he never once sought to be the protagonist, no matter what position he held. He could not forget the thoughts of the <Righteous Army fighters>, most of whom did not even leave their names behind, who fought alongside him and willingly gave their lives for the independence of their homeland. Although he never showed it outwardly, among the comrades who lived and died on different paths were his wife and eldest son. As the author writes, “A cold wind from the Kaema Plateau must have blown through the General’s heart throughout his entire life.”

This screenplay portrays both Hong Beom-do the independence hero and Hong Beom-do the human being. It also calls out, one by one, the names of the heroes who fought alongside him but eventually faded into the oblivion of history. Having reclaimed their names and their place in the spaces and times of memory, they come vividly back to life at Dandallyeong Pass in Geumgangsan, along the Tumen River, across the Kaema Plateau and Primorsky Krai, and in Bongo-dong and Hailong. They march, fight, sing, and dance. It is a grand dance of independence, a dance of liberation.
